Today, the Suffolk County Police Department remembers Police Officer Carmelo Cattano who died in the line of duty on May 30, 1963.

Officer Cattano was involved in a motor vehicle crash during which he was thrown from his vehicle and suffered injuries to his head, chest, and lower extremities.

He was transported to Huntington Hospital, where he died.

Police Officer Cattano was survived by his wife.

We have learned during those five decades that you can’t keep time in a bottle, as so much has changed. Since 1974 cell phones, and the Internet were created and the Berlin Wall fell. But there has been one constant… Karen Malewicz working for Suffolk County.

Karen began her career in Data Processing spending nine years with Social Services. In 1983, Karen entered the John L. Barry Suffolk County Police Headquarters in Yaphank and never left. Until now. Karen has finally left the building to enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

Karen rose the ranks advancing to Data Entry Operator in 1988, promoted to Senior Data Entry Operator in 2005 and advanced to Office Systems Technician in 2009.

But 51 (and a half!) years is more than a career, it’s a legacy. And Karen’s legacy isn’t in the data she entered, but rather how everyone in the building knew and adored her.

Thank you Karen for all you’ve done, you are timeless to the county and SCPD.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and Suffolk County Clerk Vincent Puleo joined Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina, members of the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association, and law enforcement leaders for a special tree planting ceremony at Police Headquarters yesterday as part of the “250 Planting It Forward” initiative.

A blue spruce was dedicated in honor of the brave members of the SCPD.

The tree will also be permanently added to the Suffolk 250 Living Legacy Tree Registry in recognition of all the SCPD members who serve and protect our communities every day.
This event is part of the Suffolk 250 initiative commemorating America’s upcoming 250th Anniversary.

It was rainy and dreary outside but the energy inside was nothing but positive as the Suffolk County Association of Women Police hosted a fundraiser to benefit the fight against breast cancer at The View in Oakdale on Sunday.

Deputy Commissioner Belinda Groneman joined members of the department, current and former, and others in the community to show solidarity in the fight against a disease that accounts for nearly 30% of all new female cancers each year.

As part of the effort to crack down on alcohol and drug impaired driving and keep the roads safe, the SCPD Highway Patrol Bureau SAFE-T Team, along with the Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs and MTA Police Department, kicked off the holiday weekend with an overnight checkpoint in Patchogue. Of the 496 vehicles that went through, eight drivers were arrested. Four of them were charged with Driving While Intoxicated, three for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, and another for Driving While Ability Impaired by Alcohol.

Officers will continue to be on the lookout for drivers who shouldn't be behind the wheel with extra enforcement throughout this holiday weekend, so don't drive impaired, be prepared: Make sure you and your friends and family drive sober and safely, or have plans for a ride service in place.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina joined County Executive Ed Romaine and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office to announce increased DWI patrols ahead of the holiday weekend and deployment of a drug screening technology—making SCPD the first downstate agency to utilize it.

The increase in staffing include increasing personnel in the Suffolk Intensified Traffic Enforcement (SITE) team from Memorial Day to Labor Day, utilizing officers with the Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team (SAFE-T) on marine boats for BWI enforcement for the upcoming holiday weekend and a new pilot program to staff Marine Delta 24 hours a day on the North Shore.

We are urging everyone to plan ahead. If you are going to be under the influence, do not get behind the wheel. Do not put your life and the lives of others at risk.

Another great Coffee with a Cop event hosted by Suffolk County Guardians at My Towns Cafe in East Islip.

Events like this one gives us the opportunity to connect with members of the community and have meaningful conversations strengthening our relationship with the public. Deputy Commissioners Belinda Groneman and Thomas Galati were in attendance to show their support at this community gathering.
