We’re proud to share the winning photographs from our 2026 photo contest: Ecosystems. We received a plethora of beautiful images capturing the spectacular array of biodiversity right here in Northwest Indiana. It’s important to reflect on the value of protecting our public lands, not only for the benefits they provide to people, but for the role healthy ecosystems play in supporting plants, animals, and climate resilience. Jammin with Save the Dunes is just around the corner, and we're amping up the energy and excitement with a giveaway! Check out this thought-provoking article from the IndyStar, which discusses the impacts and importance of climate resiliency here in Indiana. These stories and experiences become critically important as wetlands continue to disappear from our landscapes. Northwest Indiana’s communities have been deeply impacted by recent storm events, experiencing flooding, downed trees, and widespread power outages. When a crisis is at our front door, it’s easy to consider solutions, but we need to build a culture of proactiveness that keeps these issues front of mind even after the immediate crisis has passed. Recent flooding has offered a powerful reminder of the important role wetlands play in protecting our communities, but we can’t wait for the next disaster to act.

The next Indiana legislative session, which begins on January 12, 2027, will surely bring many wetland-related bills. Save the Dunes will be diligently monitoring and commenting on any bills that aim to deregulate or further degrade wetlands in Indiana. Follow along with us as we head into the legislative session to stay informed and learn how you can help protect Indiana’s wetlands. We hope you’ll join us in this work to protect our environment, which ultimately protects us.

Indiana once had natural sponges that soaked up floodwater for free. We drained them, and we keep developing our remaining wetlands.

Thank you to everyone who came out or contributed to Katie’s Gold Award Fundraiser Concert. Katie met her goal of raising $2000 for her project, she actually exceeded it! The funding will help tremendously with her project, building a Nature Play Area at Save the Dunes.
