Happy Belayed 100th to Signalman 1st Class Andrew Shubin! 🎉🎂

On Saturday, members from Maritime Safety & Security Team Los Angeles/Long Beach (MSST LA/LB) surprised their Coast Guard hero on his special day.

The MSST LA/LB crew busted Shubin during his 100th birthday celebration alongside his family and friends.

Shubin served in the U.S. Coast Guard for five years during World War 2 on three cutters. He also served in Pacific Grove, CA where he conducted shoreside patrols on the beaches of California.

to Shubin for his dedicated service!

The first National Disability Employment awareness event at Coast Guard Island was held today! During this event, speakers, including Adm. Tiongson, Lt. Cmdr. Hite, Danette Davis of Light House, and Phillip K*m, a legally blind EPA employee, informed and explained of the Coast Guard's support in equal opportunity for disabled employment, as well as advancements in technology to aid the disabled.

The panel also discussed some of the struggles and challenges that someone who is disabled can face on a day to day basis, and why it is important to maintain an inclusive and supportive attitude towards people that don't have the basic advantages that an average person might.

A few months ago the U.S. Coast Guard at large launched the Operation Dry Water initiative to crack down on alcohol related accidents on the water.

Operation Dry Water is a National Boating Under the Influence (BUI) Awareness and Enforcement Campaign. This annual weekend-long operation occurs immediately before or after the 4th of July holiday.

This initiative resulted in 103,602 vessels contacted with 10,088 citations issued, 32,734 safety warnings and 717 BUI’s across multiple agencies across the United States.

165 units participated in the Operation across the Country! Locally, Coast Guard Station Rio Vista and U.S. Coast Guard Station Golden Gate were recognized for their excellent operational aptitude and accomplishment during the duration of the operation.

So we want to say to both Stations for their accomplishment and to all the other units here in D11 who also participated in the operation!

"I joined the first and foremost because it is a humanitarian branch; of all the branches, it is the one most focused on improving people's lives. All of the missions of the U.S. Coast Guard, such as humanitarian initiatives and environmental protection, stuck out to me. I've seen firsthand how the Coast Guard treats every member like family while working with my shipmates."

Members from the U.S. Coast Guard Los Angeles-Long Beach community (Sector, Base, Station, Aids-to-navigation, and other units) took a moment for a break from work, taking some time to spend together and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at the galley at Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach.

The Leadership Inclusion and Diversity Advisory Council (LIDAC) hosted this event, bringing together everyone to celebrate this occasion and show appreciation for diversity and inclusion.

On the occasion we watched “A Million Miles Away,” a new film released; about the story of Astronaut Jose M. Hernandez, who grew up in a Mexican-American farmer working family and overcame challenges in his life to become an engineer and, later, a NASA astronaut.

"I take great pride in the fact that even on days when we don't feel like training or working out, we do it nonetheless because we know that someone's life may depend on it," said Petty Officer Robert Ochoa. "In November, I was given a case with 19 Spanish-speaking passengers and 40 minutes to gather as many as I could before fuel became a concern. I don't believe things would have gone as smoothly without my knowledge of Spanish, nor would I have been able to prioritize helping those who were most in need."

to all agencies and partners involved, these last few days have been invaluable to Emergency Preparedness planning for the future!

This year the Bay Ferry exercise will focused on preventing, responding to, and recovering from Active Threat (AT) incidents. AT's incidents may include:
* Facility/Infrastructure Attacks
* Maritime Mass Casualty Incidents

K-9 Buda took first place in the military category at this year's American Humane Hero Dog Awards!

“I think his job specifically makes him stand out. He does a lot of intense training whether that is jumping out of helicopters, getting on fast boats and then the number of operations he does is great and a lot of community service with local schools,” said Petty Officer Chase Leamer, Buda's handler.

Service members, friends and family from the Coast Guard, Air Force, Space Force, and local police departments participated in a 24-hour multi-leg POW/MIA torch relay at 8 a.m. yesterday on Terminal Island in the port of San Pedro.

Cmdr. Lisa Sharkey, commanding officer of Coast Guard Base Los Angeles-Long Beach, and Col. Mia Walsh, commander of Space Base Delta 3, gave brief speeches about the brave men and women who were prisoners of war or missing in action before helping light the ceremonial torch for the run.

The participants carried the torch across the Vincent Thomas Bridge and through the waterfront in San Pedro, ending the first leg before passing the torch to the next group at the Cabrillo Marina.

Good job to the participants from all services, and thank you for running and carrying the torch in memory of those we will not forget.

Lt. Cmdr. Allice Gholson, commanding officer of U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Benjamin Bottoms, was honored as the recipient of the Capt. Dorothy Stratton Women’s Leadership Award. Established in 2001, these annual awards commend women who showcase exemplary leadership in line with the Coast Guard’s core values and have made impactful decisions that enhance working conditions and the quality of life.

Under Gholson’s leadership:

The cutter Benjamin Bottoms achieved a milestone by successfully integrating a Coast Guard fast response cutter in a joint exercise with the Marine Corps off the California coast.

She played a pivotal role in orchestrating a monumental 14,000 nautical mile trans-Atlantic voyage from the US to Bahrain, which included 11 foreign port visits and six international engagements.

As the Senior Officer Presently Afloat (SOPA), she has been instrumental in fortifying the bond among the fast response cutters based in San Pedro, California, thereby enhancing both mission success and the well-being of the crews.

A staunch advocate for diversity and inclusion, Lt. Cmdr. Gholson is a founding member of the Coast Guard’s Greater Los Angeles – Long Beach Women’s Leadership Initiative Chapter.

Join us in celebrating Gholson's remarkable contributions and unwavering commitment to the U.S. Coast Guard.

U.S. Coast Guard Station Monterey conducted a multi-agency mass rescue operation with CAL FIRE, Monterey Fire Department and staff from U. S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco.

During the operation the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hawksbill played the role of a crowded whale watching vessel that had caught Fire.

The response included , retrieval of simulated people in the water, medical triage and treatment of passengers.

There were many lessons learned from the operation and it was an invaluable tool for practice and coordination.

“Periodic drills like these are critical to exercise and refine our search and rescue response plans, train and test our crews, and to maintain those relationships and communication lines between agencies so that we are always ready to respond to emergency situations in the most austere conditions” said Coast Guard Lieutenant Matthew Peryea, Commanding Officer of Station Monterey.
