#SARSunday USCG, local fire department medevac woman from sailboat 380 miles west of Bodega Bay
#SARSunday #BZ to the U.S. Coast Guard San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews who worked with San Francisco Fire Department personnel to medevac a 23-year-old woman from a sailboat 380 miles west of Bodega Bay last Tuesday!
Eleventh Coast Guard District Command Center watchstanders received a notification via satellite communicator at approximately 1:45 p.m. Monday, from the captain of the sailboat Cibola, reporting a woman had accidently ingested antifreeze.
Due to the distance off shore and range limitations of U.S. Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco MH-65 Dolphin helicopters, watchstanders directed the forward deployment of a Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew to Air Station San Francisco.
Additionally, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Midgett (WMSL 757) was diverted to serve as a refueling platform for the Jayhawk helicopter.
The Sector San Diego Jayhawk helicopter arrived at Air Station San Francisco at approximately 9 p.m. Monday. The helicopter was refueled, crews were changed and a San Francisco Fire Department paramedic boarded before departing on the medevac mission.
A US Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento C-27 Spartan aircrew launched around 9:55 p.m. Monday to provide cover for the Jayhawk crew throughout the mission and rendezvoused with the Jayhawk before both crews headed offshore.
The Jayhawk crew landed on the Midgett to refuel approximately 230 miles west of San Francisco around 11:45 p.m. and then proceeded toward the Cibola.
The Jayhawk crew arrived on scene with the Cibola around 2:15 a.m. Tuesday and lowered the rescue swimmer to assess the situation.
The rescue swimmer assisted in hoisting the woman into the helicopter and once the rescue swimmer was retrieved, the helicopter crew headed back to the Midgett.
“The San Francisco Fire Department paramedic’s assistance was vital to saving the sailor’s life as he assisted the Coast Guard rescue swimmer to stabilize and care for her during the four-hour tr

National Aviation Day
August 19 was established as #NationalAviationDay by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939.
Today we take a moment to thank our U.S. Coast Guard aviation crews: our pilots, aircrews and the support crews who help make our search-and-rescue operations a success.
Our #aviation community consists of approximately 800 pilots and an enlisted workforce of approximately 2,500. Together, these pilots and aircrews fly 5 types of aircraft in the #USCG’s inventory, representing 200 airframes dispersed among 24 Air Stations.
The Air Stations utilize the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, the MH-60 Jayhawk, and the fixed winged HC-130 Hercules, HC-144 Ocean Sentry and C-27J Spartan.

Coast Guard air crews conduct cliff training
"In the U.S. Coast Guard, we need to be prepared to respond to complex and challenging rescues on the ocean," said Lt. Patrick Johnsen, a pilot at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco. "This includes the numerous vertical cliffs of the pacific shoreline."
"Our ability to train for this evolution in a controlled environment helps us ensure an understanding of safe hoisting altitudes, dealing with turbulence caused by sheer cliffs, and the safe insertion of the rescuer," said Johnsen. "This proficiency and skill development will help reduce the risk when someone's life is on the line."

Serving Openly
“Families have all shapes and colors.”
CDR Hale Allegretti, the waterways management division chief at U. S. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, speaks about the importance of being able to serve openly as #LGBTQ during his time in the military.
Allegretti, a #transgender service member, joined the U.S. Coast Guard under the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, which prohibited members from disclosing their orientation.
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell impacted me because I always felt like there was a wall of secrecy between me and my shipmates,” said Allegretti.
The Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act of 2010 ended the policy, thus allowing #LGBTQ people to serve openly in the United States Armed Forces.
“When you can put words to what you’re feeling and what you’re seeing and be supported by the people around you, to feel respected, to feel like you can serve in a safe place, there’s really no way to measure it,” said Allegretti. “It’s incredible.”
