May is Mental Health Awareness Month 🧠

As Arts For Life’s programs in Behavioral Health continue to expand, many of our AFL Team and volunteers took the opportunity to participate in Mental Health First Aid Training earlier this year. Here are a few words from Winston-Salem Program Director, Betsey about the experience:

“Mental Health First Aid training provided our team of staff and volunteers with the tools we need to better serve all the patients we work with in our chapter hospitals. We left equipped with stronger knowledge of mental health conditions, how to communicate with our patients about different conditions, and how to be better advocates.”

This kind of professional development is vital to providing the level of quality and intentional care for our team and volunteers and offering that same care to our pediatric patients and families. Thank you to Mental Health First Aid USA for providing this important opportunity!

We can’t spell EARTH without ART, so we’re wishing you a Happy Earth Day! 🌎

We love to collaborate with our facility dog teams and friends at Happy2Heal at Atrium Health Levine Children's, and our AFL Team and Artists had so much fun with Hailey and Sage 🐶

Thanks to our Charlotte Program Coordinator, Andrea K., for sharing all of the fun steps of creating in Art and Bark 🎨🐾

“Participants created paintings of the Earth by squirting white (clouds), blue (water), and green (land) paint onto paper. We placed acetate over the paint, added applesauce on top, and Sage - motivated by her love of applesauce, used her tongue to gently spread and blend the colors. The result was beautiful, swirled interpretations of the Earth and its atmosphere, along with plenty of smiles and laughter.”

Creating and cultivating the process is part of inspiring courage through creativity here at Arts For Life! ✨

Our AFL Staff loves to learn and explore through the work of all kinds of art and artists, then take back our findings to support our pediatric patients and families! 🖼️

“When our program staff toured Davidson College Art Galleries during a staff retreat, we were inspired by their program where students can check out art to be hung in their dorms. Winston-Salem Program Coordinator Sarah made small info signs for the patient rooms and gathered artwork for a ‘look book’ that patients chose laminated artwork to hang in their rooms in the inpatient unit for Oncology and Hematology.

We even provide gloves, so the kids can flip through the look book like a museum curator! It is such a fun way for kids to connect with one another and participate in the arts even when they aren't feeling up to making it themselves.”

Thank you to our Winston-Salem Program Director, Betsey, and our Winston-Salem Program Coordinator, Sarah, for sharing how to inspire courage through creativity! 📖
