The Five Points Business Improvement District exists to strengthen and enhance the efforts of business and property owners who live, work in, or contribute to the Historic Five Points neighborhood of Denver. The Five Points Corridor is a multi-cultural entertainment and business district rooted in African-American history and seen as a destination for arts, culture and entertainment. Located along

a light rail corridor on the northeast edge of downtown Denver, the district offers quick access to downtown and adjoining neighborhoods. The corridor is the focal point and central gathering place for the surrounding neighborhoods of San Rafael, Curtis Park, Cole, Whittier and Five Points.

They called him the “Mayor of Five Points.”

This week’s Did You Know? highlights Ben Hooper, a businessman and community leader who helped make Welton Street a center of Black social life in Denver.

During the Great Depression, Hooper didn’t just run a business—he fed families, supported children, and created a place where the community could gather.

His impact went far beyond 2623–2627 Welton Street. He helped build community when community was needed most.

HE BUILT WEALTH ONE DOLLAR AT A TIME.

This week’s Did You Know? highlights Charles Lilburn Cousins—a Pullman porter, real estate investor, and respected leader in Denver’s African American community.

His philosophy was simple: save 10% of every dollar you earn.

Cousins used those savings to purchase and renovate property throughout Whittier and Five Points, teaching himself construction skills along the way. He eventually became one of Colorado’s wealthiest Black residents of his time—and passed those skills on to the next generation.

His legacy lives on today, with the Cousins family continuing to own property he developed on Welton Street.

What can Charles Cousins’ story teach us about building wealth and ownership today?

🌱 “This project is about more than planting flowers—it’s about planting ownership, pride, and sustainability throughout the Five Points community.”

When we partnered with and , the vision was simple: create something beautiful, educational, and beneficial for the people who live, work, and visit the Welton Street Corridor.

Together with volunteers, community residents, and local partners, we transformed planters from South Welton to North Welton with edible plants that will continue to grow and serve as a living reminder of what community collaboration can accomplish.

This initiative is about reconnecting people to food, creating greener public spaces, and showing what’s possible when neighbors come together around a shared vision.

The work doesn’t stop here. This is just one step toward building a healthier, more vibrant, and more connected Five Points.

Take a stroll down Welton Street and see the impact for yourself. 🌿

Special thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and energy, and to our partners , , and for helping bring this vision to life.

WHAT A DAY FOR FIVE POINTS!

Community Planting Day was a tremendous success, and the Five Points community showed up with a true green thumb.

Together, volunteers, community residents, and our incredible partners at , and transformed the Welton Street Corridor from South Welton to North Welton—planting, beautifying, and investing in the future of our neighborhood one planter at a time.

The best part? 🌿 Everything planted is edible.

From fresh herbs to edible plants, these planters are more than beautification—they’re a living reminder of what can happen when a community comes together with purpose.

Take a walk down Welton Street and see the transformation with your own eyes. The corridor is blooming, and this is just the beginning.

💚 Thank you to every volunteer, partner, and resident who got their hands dirty to make a difference.
