The Navy League of the United States is a civilian, non-profit organization supporting the U.S. Flag Merchant Marines as well as the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps. Membership is open to any civilian, veteran or reserve member of the armed forces.

Former Detroit Lions Quarterback Eric Hipple recently paid a visit to the USS Detroit at Naval Station Mayport, Florida. Hipple is the Director of Outreach for the “After The Impact” program at the Eisenhower Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The former Lions star was in the Jacksonville are giving presentations to Navy personnel at NAS Jacksonville and Naval Station Mayport. Hipple, a big supporter of veterans was excited to visit the ship and meet the crew. METDET would like to thank Eric for sending the pictures and we hope to see him at our next meeting.

On Friday, June 8th, The University of Michigan NROTC Change of Command ceremony was held in Ann Arbor, MI. Captain Lawrence G. Getz relieved Captain Christopher J. Dennis becoming the Universityiiverisy of Michigan NROTC’s 30th Commanding Officer. A celebration was also held for Captain Dennis’s retirement from the Navy after 29 years of dedicated and honorable service. METDET President Janina Jacobs represented METDET and provided us with these images.

Mr. Art Bryant accepts an award from the Midshipmen, Faculty, and Staff of the United States Naval Academy on behalf of the Detroit Women's Council of the Navy League. The award, given for their generous support of the Naval Academy is presented by Dr. Andrew T. Phillips, Academic Dean and Provost (left) and Midshipman 1/c John Brough. The ceremony was held in Annapolis on May 24, 2018.

Coast Guard (CG) personnel hosted the quarterly meeting of the Metropolitan Detroit Council of the United States Navy League (METDET) at the Coast Guard Air Station Detroit on Selfridge ANGB Monday, May 21. The CG Commanding Officer Capt. Louie Parks introduced welcomed the visitors and LT Robby Chavez gave a brief on the CG Air Stations capabilities. The meeting was followed with a live lifesaving demonstration, a static display of the MH-65D Dolphin Search and Rescue Helicopter, and a hands-on presentation by Search and Rescue Swimmer AST2 Jacob Garbrecht. Refreshments and appreciation were provided by METDET.
