OSU Extension Adams County wrapped up the Spring 2026 Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist course. We want to thank the participants, state specialists, volunteers, and local naturalists who helped make this program a huge success! Our participants spent over 40 hours of combined classroom and field instruction learning about ecological concepts, aquatic life, geology, soils, botany, forests, insects, birds, mammals, reptiles & amphibians, and climate & weather. An Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist is an individual with a passion for the natural world who wishes to attend training and use his or her knowledge by giving back to the community through volunteer service. We look forward to seeing the great work this group will bring to our community.

Today ag juniors and seniors from Peebles High School and Ohio Valley Career & Technical Center participated in Ag Reality. This farm based simulation tasks students with creating a farm plan for 300 acres and maintaining cash flow statements and a farm balance sheet. They work with real world agribusinesses to buy and sell seed, fertilizer, equipment, livestock, insurance, buildings, timber, fence, crop insurance, meet with financial professionals to establish operating and equipment loans, and work with government agencies to explore programs and opportunities. Students participate in a mock auction, hear about career pathways and life advice from vendors, and work with Extension professionals to create their business plans. The day is rounded out with a “Reality Check” where they are given average yields and prices from a year in recent history to determine if they were profitable or not.
Thank you to all our community members, businesses, and students that participated today! This program offers valuable, real world, lessons for participants.

Thank you to the OSU Alumni Club of Adams and Brown Counties and Adams County Farm Bureau for sponsoring this event!
