This week 3-71 Cavalry Regiment, 1BCT, 10th MTN DIV (LI), honors the legacy of PFC Theodore B. Rushing.

PFC Theodore B. Rushing, 25, of Longwood, Fla. died Nov. 11, 2011, in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment; 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light), Fort Drum, N.Y.

PFC Rushing joined the U.S. Army in March of this year. Upon completion of his training at Ft. Benning, Georgia, PFC Rushing reported to Fort Drum, New York. In August he deployed with his unit to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. PFC Rushing's impressive list of awards and decorations include the Purple Heart; Army Achievement Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; NATO Medal; National Defense Service Medal; the Combat Action Badge; and a Bronze Star awarded posthumously.

PFC Rushing was a former student at Altamonte Christian School in Altamonte Springs where he had a reputation of being fearless, an attribute that he carried into battle. Upon completion of high school, PFC Rushing attended Seminole State College where he earned his associates degree. PFC Rushing had planned on following in his father's footsteps as a police officer once he had completed his military service. We shall never forget the ultimate sacrifice PFC Rushing has given for his country.

Thank you, PFC Theodore B. Rushing.

This week, 3-71 Cavalry Regiment, 1BCT, 10th MTN DIV, honors the legacy of SGT Michael F. Parazino.

Sergeant Michael F. Parazino was killed in Kandahar by an improvised explosive device on November 5, 2010. The Newport, and Middleton, Rhode Island soldier was twenty-two years old. The decorated soldier had been a cavalry scout with the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He had been in Afghanistan since March, after serving a tour in Iraq.

Michael was a 2006 graduate of Middletown High School. A year after his graduation he enlisted in the Army and was a cavalry scout with the 1st Squadron, 71st Calvary Regiment. After his basic training he was stationed at Fort Drum in 2008 and was deployed to the Middle East as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom just a few months later. In 2010 Michael was sent to Afghanistan to support Operation Enduring Freedom. He was recognized with more than 10 decorations for his military service just after three-plus years, including the Army Achievement Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Ribbon, the NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge.

During high school, Michael did some wrestling and was also a good archer. He didn’t want to go to college right away and explored other options, such as working at a tent company and toiling on fishing boats. Ultimately he decided to volunteer for the military. “He said, ‘I don’t want to be a nobody and hang around here. I want to make something of my life,’ ” his father recalled.
He grew up in the St. Lucy’s Parish community where he was baptized, participated in CCD classes and was confirmed. While he was a student at Middletown High School, Michael made trips to Nicaragua in January of 2005 and 2006 with the Northeast Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (NEVOSH) to provide humanitarian support to the disadvantaged and poor in Catarina and Nandasmo, Nicaragua. These trips provided life-expanding experiences for Michael and were the precursor to many of the values he believed in along with the leadership skills that he displayed as an Army Sergeant.

He is survived by his wife and his two sons of Fort Drum, NY, his parents and his brother of Middletown, RI. Sgt. Michael F. Paranzino, a decorated soldier, had been a cavalry scout with the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.

Thank you, SGT Michael F. Parazino.

Ghost Squadron,

This week 3-71 Cavalry Regiment honors the legacy of SFC Charles M. Sadell.

SFC Charles M. Sadell, 34, of Columbia, Mo., died Oct. 24 at National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md., of wounds suffered Oct. 5 2010 at Arif Kala, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.

Charles Sadell was just out of Missouri’s Harrisburg High School in 1995 when he enlisted in the Army. Known to his friends by “CJ”, he was searching for direction. He found it, along with a lengthy and decorated career that took him from his home in Columbia, Mo., to Saudi Arabia, Kosovo, Germany, Iraq, and Afghanistan, where he was deployed in the spring.

An avid outdoorsman who loved to spend time hunting, fishing and nailing balls on a golf course, the 34-year-old intelligence analyst married Kristin McMillan in 1999. The couple had two sons, Cameron and Hunter.

“He was a standup guy, he was respectful, a great husband and an amazing father. Everyone that met him just fell in love with him because he was a charmer.”

Thank you, SFC Charles M. Sadell.
