According to the FTC, Mainers lost more than $1,700,000 to government imposter scams in 2025. Today, in partnership with the Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General and AGs across the country, we are sharing a reminder that the government will never call you and threaten your benefits if you don't pay or provide personal information. To report a government imposter scam, contact our office here: https://www.maine.gov/ag/consumer/complaints/index.shtml or www.reportfraud.ftc.gov

𝗦𝗖𝗔𝗠 𝗔𝗟𝗘𝗥𝗧! A scam targeting corporations & nonprofits was reported to the Office of Secretary of State in which a business received an offer to file annual reports on their behalf for a $210 fee. The misleading solicitation form looks similar to the Maine Secretary of State Department’s Division of Corporations, UCC & Commissions’ annual report form, but it is not authorized by, recognized by, nor does it come from the Maine Department of the Secretary of State. Maine corporations have received similar solicitations in recent years from entities operating under various names. Information for entities included on the forms all comes from publicly available information, making them seem legitimate. The Division of Corporations, UCC & Commissions does not mail out the annual report form, making the form available online instead. The 2026 annual report will not be available until January 2026, and the annual report filing fee for established domestic business entities is $85, nonprofit corporations is $35, and foreign business entities is $150.

Awareness is the greatest defense against scams. Every day Mainers call us to report scam attempts. In many sad cases, money has already been lost, or sensitive private information exposed. We are proud to partner with the Maine Credit Union League to raise awareness and help Mainers learn how protect themselves, their assets, and their identities from scams.

The goal of the educational video is to educate Mainers - particularly older Mainers - about the dangers of scams and how to avoid them.

“AmeriCorps represents some of the best of American values: service, community, and opportunity,” said Frey, “and Maine would have been deprived of this important, congressionally-funded AmeriCorps programming had I not joined suit to enforce the law.”

The Trump administration has agreed to release $184 million for AmeriCorps, the federal agency for service and volunteerism, after a coalition of 22 attorneys general and two governors sued in April. The coalition, which included Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey, challenged the administration’s p...
