12/09/2023

We are receiving a number of complaints about telephone scams claiming to be from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer tells the victim they have missed a court date or didn’t attend a mandatory jury summons. As a result, the scammer tries to leverage money from the victim. They will use coercion tactics such as avoiding an arrest, jail time, or higher fines.

Typically, these scammers are using VoIP phone numbers. A VoIP (or Voice over Internet Protocol) number is basically a virtual phone number. You can purchase these numbers over various websites or applications. Scammers/Cybercriminals have found a way to leverage VoIP technology to carry out a new type of scam where they can make phone calls over the Internet, pose as a legitimate business, and request for personal and financial information. The following phone numbers are those that have been reported by recent victims claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office:

(217)764-8719
(217)599-5663

These phone numbers are VoIP based and are NOT legitimate numbers for the Sheriff’s Office. If you ever receive a phone call claiming to be from the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, don’t call them back on the number they give you. If you get a phone call from a Deputy, call Sangamon County Dispatch at (217)753-6666. If you get a call from a Detective, call (217)753-6840. If you get a call from a State’s Attorney, call (217)753-6690. The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER request or demand money over the telephone under any circumstances.

Additionally, you can always refer to our contact page on our website at https://www.sangamoncounty-sheriff.com/contact-us/ and the Sangamon County website https://co.sangamon.il.us/

We would also like to thank the good members of the community for bringing this information to our attention.

On August 18, 2023, the Sheriff’s Office took a child abuse report at a residence in the 400 block of North Daniel in Springfield. The Sheriff’s Office was alerted by staff with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services that a minor child was being subjected to physical and mental abuse in the home.

Detectives were assigned to investigate the case, in conjunction with DCFS and the Sangamon County Child Advocacy Center. A search warrant was obtained for the residence, and in-home surveillance cameras were seized as evidence on August 23rd.

On August 24, 2023, the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office issued arrest warrants for the two adults residing in the home. Randy J. Rogers, 35, and Ashley M. Rogers, 31, both of the 400 block of North Daniel, are each charged with three counts of Aggravated Battery. Both were taken into custody at their home at approximately 3:30P.M., and transported to the Sangamon County Jail without incident. Both remain incarcerated on bonds of $200,000.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, Sangamon County Child Advocacy Center, and the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
