Today, our office secured a conviction in the case against Michelle Barrientes Vela. This was a case about public corruption and today's verdict reinforces the fact that no one is above the law. We would like to thank the jury and state's witnesses for their time over the past two weeks and we would also like to give a special shout out to the prosecution team. ADAs Dawn McGraw and Oscar Salinas, Sgt. Investigator Kenneth Tollett, and Victim Advocate Angela Trevino went above and beyond in their public service to ensure that our community is safe.

Today, as part of our child abuse multi-disciplinary team, Family Violence Division Chief Meli Powers and ADA Grant Bryan were part of a collaborative training for our law enforcement and CPS partners. Opportunities to share experience and resources can help empower all who are involved in the justice system to protect the children in our community!

DA Gonzales recently participated in NAMI's Pathways to Hope conference. This conference brought many community leaders and professionals together to discuss issues regarding mental illness and domestic violence and help connect those in need with local resources.

San Antonio man given life sentence in deadly shooting over rental tires

Assistant District Attorneys Nicole Phillips and Kristina Escalona have secured a conviction for Richard Vallejo for a 2020 murder in San Antonio. Acts of gun violence, such as the murder of Andrew Gomez, have no place in our community. Our office will continue to hold violent offenders accountable.

Richard Vallejo was found guilty of murder for the June 2020 shooting death of Andrew Gomez.

Today, the Texas “trigger law” will go into effect limiting access to vital healthcare for millions of Texans. This law will put already vulnerable populations such as victims of domestic violence, victims of s*xual assault, and the LGBTQ+ community in unnecessary harm.

The Bexar County District Attorney’s job is to promote the safety and well-being of everyone in our community. Bexar County DA Joe Gonzales and the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office will always fight to promote the rights and safety of women. We will continue to focus the Office’s resources on prosecuting violent crime and supporting the victims of these crimes.

Yesterday morning, DA Gonzales addressed the City of San Antonio's Public Safety Committee. In order to protect the community, we must focus resources on violent crime prosecution, utilize tools to reduce recidivism rates and develop and fund crime-prevention strategies. We are excited to continue working with the City Council to implement these measures proven to prevent violence.

City Council District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran and Texas State Representative Elizabeth 'Liz' Campos are hosting a Back-to-School event with backpacks, school supplies and much more! Last night, DA Joe Gonzales participated in a forum hosted by City Council District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez. This forum provided a space for community leaders and District 2 neighbors to collaborate on solutions to make our community safer. Bexar County is a safer place for everyone when we invest in crime prevention.

This morning, DA Gonzales joined San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus and the Bexar County Sheriff's Office at Barbara Gervin-Hawkins monthly Power Breakfast for an important conversation on gun violence and mass shootings. Our community must continue to work together to prevent violent crime before it happens and continue to hold those who commit it accountable.

This afternoon our office welcomed the chiefs and command staff of Bexar County, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies for the District Attorney's second Quarterly Law Enforcement Chiefs Meeting. This quarter we discussed current trends in family violence cases our office receives, the resources available to survivors of domestic violence through the Bexar County Family Justice Center, and much more.

This past Sunday, members of our Office spent the afternoon volunteering with the San Antonio Church of Hope to serve meals to those experiencing homelessness. Our team had a great time getting to know the individuals who attended the service while giving back to the community. Thank you to all of the volunteers who came out on Sunday and to the team of organizers who make sure this service happens every weekend!

Second Chance for Success Bi-Annual Update

The Second Chance for Success Program is a first of its kind project aimed at helping individuals who have low level, non-violent Bexar County criminal history. The project was made for people who are looking to take the next step – whether that’s towards housing, employment, licensing…whatever it might be, and that criminal history is the one thing keeping them from achieving these goals.

A Bexar County Jury sentenced a local man to two 40-year prison sentences for s*xually assaulting a young girl.

We are grateful for the jury’s decision, as they clearly understood the severity of child s*xual abuse. What happened to this child is terrible, and we will continue to protect victims in this community. Those who prey on children will be held accountable. This jury of Bexar County residents sends a powerful message to this defendant that his crime will not be tolerated in our community

A murder defendant who cut off his GPS monitor while on bond awaiting trial was arrested late Tuesday. This defendant is not the only person awaiting trial on a violent crime to refuse to comply with their bond conditions. That’s why the District Attorney’s Office is focusing on finding these fugitives. While our office does not set bonds or conditions, when defendants violate the court’s order we can make every effort to bring them back to court so that they can face a judge and jury for their crimes. The safety of everyone in Bexar County relies on this.

Bexar County DA zeroes in on "switch" device to curb gun violence

Gun violence in Bexar County, and across the nation, must be addressed. DA Gonzales and our Bexar County District Attorney's Community Advisory Panel used our most recent meeting to discuss actions that our office can take to hold those who commit acts of gun violence accountable. We are also continuing to collaborate on ways we can advocate for meaningful changes to gun reform and improving gun violence prevention.

Anyone caught with the device attached to a gun will face a felony charge and up to 10 years in prison.

Our office recently welcomed some very special visitors--UTSA's Criminal Justice Summer Camp! This camp invites high school students to explore the criminal justice system and potential careers. During their visit, DA Gonzales and some of our division chiefs were able to meet with the students and discuss prosecution and the role of the District Attorney's Office.

I am devastated by the horrific shooting in Uvalde today and my heart breaks for the children, the teachers, the families, and the community that needlessly lost loved ones. What happened today is both unimaginable and also all too common in this country. It is clear that our thoughts and prayers are not enough. We need actual solutions that address the rash of mass shootings that plague our nation.

Today, we must begin by wrapping our arms around the Uvalde community and providing the immediate assistance that it needs. People will need trauma support, and we cannot hesitate to provide it. I have offered my victims’ services department to help support the victims and connect them with the resources and help that they need. We will also be raising money to help support the Uvalde community in the coming weeks, months, and years.

Blood donations are also badly needed. Our office is planning to roll up our sleeves and donate blood. We call on anyone who can to join us in this small but desperately needed effort.

This weekend, DA Gonzales participated in a City of Kirby community forum on crime. The DA, Sheriff, and other stakeholders came together to discuss the community's concerns and how everyone can come together to hold those who commit crimes accountable. Thank you to the Kirby City Council and Police Department for hosting this important conversation.
