Meeting Tuesday, April 21st

Our April meeting will feature Mrs. Janet McMahan, who will speak about fluoridation of the water supply. She was responsible for stopping fluoridation in Ocilla, GA, and is known as the “Georgia Water Lady.” Come hear her story of finding arsenic and other contaminants in the water supply and relating it to a rash of cancer cases, which included her son, Ben.

On your ballot in May will be a referendum question: “Because 73 studies have reported that elevated fluoride exposure is associated with reduced IQ in children, do you want to stop the traditional addition of fluoride to the Valdosta/Lowndes water supply?”

In addition to reduced IQ in children, excess fluoride consumption contributes to thyroid disruption and other health problems. Come learn the facts from our speaker.

Invite your friends to our meeting.

A Meet & Greet begins at 6:00 pm and the meeting at 6:30 pm.

Meeting location is the Comfort Suites Valdosta at 1332 St. Augustine Rd., Valdosta, 31601. It is next to the Holiday Inn Express behind Denny’s restaurant near Exit 18 on I-75. At the traffic light, turn into the Denny’s parking lot and drive to the far back. The meeting room is accessed by entering the lobby and is on the left side.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 31st is Meet the Candidates Forum to be held at the Valdosta Performing Arts Center from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Candidates for GA House District 177, Lowndes County Commission District 4 and Valdosta City Council District 4 will be interviewed. Everyone is invited to attend. Moderators will be Angela Ward, Steve Nichols, and Lakisha Brooks. “This forum is designed to provide a fair, respectful, and informative space where candidates can share their vision and where citizens can hear directly from those seeking to serve. It is also an opportunity to encourage civic engagement and bring together diverse voices across our community.”

Advanced voting for the Primary Election begins April 27th. The new Advanced Voting Location is the Public Safety Training Center, 903 N. Patterson St., across from The Crescent. Election Day is May 19th at your assigned precinct.

The Elections Office needs poll workers to work the two weekends of early voting. The dates are May 2/3rd, and May 9/10th. Saturdays are full days, but Sunday is 11-6. If you are interested in working, contact Robert Davila. [email protected]

We will not have our monthly meeting in May because it falls on Election Day. Many of our members are poll workers, and others are helping to get out the vote.

We hope to see you at our meeting on April 21st.

Property Tax Referendum
Voters in Lowndes County will decide on local acts to significantly increase homestead exemptions, which would reduce property taxes starting January 1, 2027. The proposed changes include:
Standard Exemption: Increasing the standard homestead exemption from $6,000 to $12,000.
Senior Exemptions (Age 65+): Increasing the exemption for residents 65 and older to $40,000.
Senior Exemptions (Age 70+): Introducing a new exemption of $50,000 for residents 70 and older.
These local measures follow the county and school board's decision to opt out of state-level changes (HB 581) in favor of these specific local relief plans.

The Lowndes County Board of Elections announced two changes to voting locations that will affect voters this year. Advanced voting for Lowndes County and all municipalities will be moved to the Lowndes County Public Safety Training Center, formerly the VSU Continuing Education Building, located at 903 N. Patterson St., across the street from The Crescent. Two voting precincts — Precinct 5, which formerly voted at the Lowndes County elections Office, and Precinct 14, which formerly voted at Mt. Calvary Church — will vote on Election Day at the Lowndes County Public Safety Training Center, too.
