About 40 sign toppers have been added throughout the Central Neighborhood with funding from a 2019 Neighborhood Improvement Grant. These signs enhance the brand and pride of the neighborhood. The design comes from Michael Pancini and they were installed by Tom Krueger - both Central neighbors.

The Community Resource Event was a success. We gave out 32 CO alarms to the community. Thanks to Lindsey O'Brien Kesling Wishing Tree Foundation for getting us the alarms, HealthLinc for setting up the event and Valpo Parks for giving us the space. We have 2 more events coming up, September 23rd at Kirchhoff Park 3-5 pm and September 30th at Valplayso 3-5pm. Hope to see you there. #KnowCO

This is the 11th year of the event, with over 200 children being part of the program since it began. Way to go Chief Balon and all of VPD. We have a great Police Department!

The Valparaiso Police Department has been re-accredited by CALEA, Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, putting the VPD among just 15 Indiana agencies and 800 nationwide to earn this accreditation. Watch to learn more from Valparaiso Mayor Matt Murphy and Police Chief Jeff Balon.

It's the First Day of school for the Valparaiso Community Schools. As a reminder, school zones have a reduced speed limit in the school area. Watch for kids entering and exiting school buses. Do not drive around a stopped school bus and do not go through when red flashing stop signs are extended. Law states that both sides of the road must stop when a school bus has their red flashers and stop signs out. We wish our students, teachers and staff a great start to the school year.

Valparaiso Police Department’s K9 Jax has received donation of body armor

Valparaiso Police Department’s K9 Jax has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Jax’s vest was embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of Sgt. Steve Kobitz #50 -EOW 5/25/20”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 is U.S. made, custom fitted, and NIJ certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 3,980 vests to K9s in all 50 states at a value of $6.9 million, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old, actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $960 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1,744-$2,283, weighs an average of 4-5 lb., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information, or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call 508-824-6978. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provides information, lists events, and accepts donations at www.vik9s.org, or you may mail your contribution to P.O. Box 9, East Taunton, MA 02718.
