Melody is a regular volunteer in the Resource Center who also made a meal one night a week for the Winter Shelter. She says, "When we couldn't come in and volunteer through the pandemic, I had this nagging urge to do something, and that is when it became available to volunteer and make meals, which made me so happy to be able to do. And as I walked in with the food, some were so appreciative that I was doing this for them. I've always had this need to help people who truly were down and needed any help they could get. I feel blessed, and therefore need to pass on anything I can to help. God bless you all for what you do and for all those who are helping out in any way they can. Keep up the good work!" 🧡 #NationalVolunteerWeek #NationalVolunteerMonth #volunteerappreciation #localnonprofit #volunteer #nwi

A big thank you to Girl Scout Troop #30148 from Valparaiso Community Schools for their generosity in collecting feminine hygiene products for our clients! Troop leader Linda said, “We have been unable to meet in person for some time so we have been doing monthly service projects. The girls and I had a discussion about when someone is experiencing homelessness this item should not have to be a burden for women to have access to, so we wanted to help in any way we could.”

Volunteer Gail shares, "Since I began volunteering... I've become so aware of the need for housing for many people. I am ever grateful for my own home and more so since spending time at HO. Your mission is vital to those needing housing. It is so good for me to be able to have a small part in your very important mission."

In addition to regularly volunteering in the Resource Center, Gail made meals for the Winter Shelter throughout February and March. Because of incredible volunteers like Gail—and YOU— clients in our community are finding hope for a brighter future. Today, we celebrated Street Outreach Coordinator John Witcher's last day on staff at Housing Opportunities. A former teacher with the Valpo School Corporation, John has selflessly given to those who have needed it the most throughout his last 4 years with the Street Outreach program. John said, “I have never been part of a better team. There is no 'I' in team, although in our team there is. Here at Housing Opportunities, we are: Impactful. Inclusive. Instrumental. Innovative. Inspiring.” Join us in wishing John a Happy Retirement!

03/04/2021

In response to the ever-growing need in our community for safe, warm shelter, we opened the Overnight Winter Shelter on February 3. The Winter Shelter provides our community with 10 extra beds available to people sleeping outside in the cold and helps bridge the gap when the emergency shelter has no openings. Since the shelter opened, we've been honored to serve 16 people with the help of 5 employees and 8 volunteers who staff the shelter.

Each person who enters the Winter Shelter is given a brand new pillow; we asked for your help and you responded! We're now fully stocked with pillows. 🧡 #nonprofit #communitynonprofit #endhomelessness #affordablehousing

Annual count keeps track of area’s homeless: Data used to inform policy makers

"A tent with a sleeping bag and other belongings in it sat semi-collapsed. A pillow, folded blankets and a large stuffed Tigger sat on a deflated air mattress, a grocery sack of packaged chips and snacks nearby and clothing hanging from a tree, all dusted with snow. 'It gives you a little bit of a sense of what living outdoors is like,' said John Witcher, street outreach coordinator for Housing Opportunities."

The first of at least half a dozen stops was a wooded area off a busy street behind a local business. Other stops during the day would include areas near railroad tracks and under bridges.

Resolving and preventing homelessness in our community.

Right now, dozens of people in our community have no place to live—including adults who go to work every day and kids who go to school. Some of our clients are not able to work due to crisis or disability. Many clients are working or underemployed at minimum wage, struggling to support themselves or their families. Others are living on fixed incomes that cannot cover their basic needs for food, health, and home.

We believe a safe, secure home is the foundation of growth and independence. As our community works together to resolve homelessness where we live, everyone benefits: ER visits drop, police respond to fewer calls, and existing home values increase.
