In celebration of Thanksgiving, the Housing Opportunities office will be closed this Thursday and Friday. The Resource Center will also be closed on Thursday and Friday, but will be open this weekend with hours of 10 am to 2 pm this Saturday and Sunday.

Our hearts and condolences are with the Bodensteiner family as we grieve the loss of Pat. Pat Bodensteiner was a true champion for the clients and tenants we serve and was Housing Opportunities’ very first volunteer. We also try to connect clients with agencies that specialize in job searches such as WorkOne Northwest Indiana or local staffing agencies. "We have been supporters of Housing Opportunities since the housing crisis of 2008 when so many people lost their homes due to financial upheaval. We believe everyone should have access to basic needs including housing, food, and clothing. When so many people lost jobs, they also lost their homes and had no place to go. We knew that HO was equipped to screen and direct resources to assist with these needs and extend a helping hand to get people back on their feet.
We started supporting HO by bidding on auction items online and by donating to their silent auctions held in conjunction with their fundraising events. When sheets and pillowcases were needed for their apartments, we spearheaded a drive to collect sheets, pillowcases, and funds by coordinating a “Give a Sheet” drive through Christ Lutheran Church, our place of worship. We applied for and received a Thrivent grant to purchase food items and other essentials for HO’s pantry. We also support HO financially through annual financial donations.
No one should ever have to wonder where they will lay their head at night, where the next meal will come from, or how they will provide for their family. What we do to support HO is just a “drop in the bucket” to what is needed, but together we can fill the bucket!"

The Housing Opportunities office will be closed Monday Sept. 5th in observance of Labor Day. The Resource Center will be open normal hours of 10am -2pm on Saturday and Sunday, but will be closed on Monday Sept. 5th for Labor Day.
As all of you know, Housing Opportunities' mission to resolve and prevent homelessness in our community is an effort sustained by our donors. Today, we'd like to show our appreciation for two of those generous people, Mike and Nancy.
Mike and Nancy have been faithful donors to HO for over 12 years. Their dedication and love is rooted in a personal story. Their child had a car accident in the late 90s that was nearly fatal. Their child had a long road to recovery — and also had a support network which included family, friends, and social services to lean on.
Mike and Nancy realized that without every part of that support network, their child would have been homeless. Empathizing with our neighbors in need, Mike and Nancy have continually renewed their commitment to help those who don't have the support of a family or the same access to resources as their child did.
When we asked why they choose to support HO, Mike replied, "The work you do is so important and valuable. We feel blessed to be able to support Housing Opportunities. Every one of us has had, or will have, times when we need others to help us weather a storm and you offer a hand up when the winds of life have blown a person down.”

Wes Barnes, who led a U.S. Marine Corps, mobile assault platoon in Afghanistan, told a Porter County Fair crowd of his experiences there and training to become an officer.
Last week Director of Development Lisa Franko attended the regional meeting with Prosperity Indiana, where they gathered with Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana, Northwest Indiana Community Action, and other organizations. Meet our new Director of Facilities, Jeff Johnston! Jeff has spent his career in the nonprofit sector, helping provide housing and support for people with developmental disabilities. He comes to Housing Opportunities from Mosaic in northern Indiana where he was the Executive Director for five years.
