Not all shade works the same

Shade isn’t just about blocking the sun, it’s about how the space is actually going to be used.

Sail shades give a modern, eye-catching look and work great over open play areas.

Hip shades are the more traditional option and are perfect for playgrounds, seating areas, and spaces where you want consistent coverage throughout the day.

Cantilever shades keep the posts off to the side, making them ideal for bleachers, parks, and tighter spaces where you don’t want obstructions underneath.

Umbrella shades are simple, cost-effective, and perfect for picnic tables, toddler areas, and smaller gathering spaces.

Looking for playground surfacing? Here’s the quick breakdown 👇

Wood fiber is usually the lowest upfront cost, but it’s also the highest maintenance. It shifts over time, compacts down, and needs regular refilling to stay compliant and safe.

Rubber mulch lasts longer than wood fiber and gives a softer feel, but it can still scatter outside the play area and isn’t everyone’s favorite look aesthetically.

Turf gives a super clean appearance and is low maintenance, but it still needs the proper padding system underneath to meet safety requirements.

Pour-in-place rubber is typically the highest upfront investment, but it’s also the cleanest look, ADA accessible, and one of the lowest maintenance options long-term.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to your budget, maintenance expectations, and how you want the playground to perform over time. There’s no “best” option — just the best fit for your project.

This is what it looks like when a playground is designed with intention from the start.

Everything in this space was planned around how it would actually be used, from the layout and spacing to how each section connects and flows together. It’s not crowded, it’s not random, there’s a purpose behind how everything is placed so it feels open, safe, and easy to move through.

The shade structures make a big difference too. They help keep surfaces cooler and make the space usable throughout the day, especially in the Texas heat.
Projects like this are more than just installing equipment, it’s about creating a space people will actually use and enjoy long term.
