VRFSC extends its congrats to both the Westshore neighborhood and Gabriel Albarian, Regional Firewise Coordinator and partner of Ventura Regional Fire Safe Council, for helping Westshore get through the application process. We asked Christine Maasdam, Westshore Firewise Resident Leader, on her thoughts regarding the program...

"Westshore has witnessed the impact of the devastating fires over the past years and have made an effort to be mindful of fire safety. Yet, the Firewise USA® program and Gabriel [Albarian] were a game changer for our community. The outlined 3 year plan, the targeted information, county participation and possible insurance benefits made implementing the steps not only valuable, but educational and organized. Wildfire prevention tip - Know your zones!
VCFD is teaming up with Ventura Regional Fire Safe Council and Ojai Fire Safe Council to provide tips on making your home resilient to wildfire. These important actions are a crucial part of wildfire preparedness. Here’s some easy steps you can take for each of the 3 zones around your home.
Zone 0: Ember Resistant Zone
This is the critical first five feet from your home where ember resistant materials make a tremendous difference in preventing fire from spreading to your home. Some important steps for Zone 0 include:
📍Use hardscape like gravel, pavers or concrete
📍Avoid combustible bark or mulch
📍Clear roof and gutters of vegetation
📍Clear tree branches 3’ from roofs / walls
📍Limit combustible items and furniture
📍Use non-combustible fencing & gates
Zone 1: Lean, Clean & Green Zone
This is the area from 5 - 30 feet from your home where reducing vertical and horizontal spread of fire is crucial. A few important steps for this zone:��📍Remove leaves and dead plants
📍Create spacing between trees, shrubs & flammable items
📍Limb up trees at least 6’ from the ground & 10’ from other trees
📍Keep grasses trimmed to 3” stubble
Zone 2: Fuel Reduction Zone
This is the area from 30’ to 100’ or the edge of your property line and is crucial for creating defensible space in a wildfire. Some important steps for this zone include:�
📍Cut grass to a max of 4” stubble
📍Create horizontal space between shrubs / trees
📍Create vertical space between grass, shrubs and trees
📍Remove fallen leaves, needles twigs and bark
📍Keep 10’ clearance around wood piles, buildings and propane tanks
