It will be warmer and drier today with isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms over the mountains. A few of these will drift off into the adjacent lower elevations through early evening. Gusty winds, lightning, and brief moderate rain or high elevation snow showers will be possible. Snow levels will rise to around 11000 feet today with a spotty inch or two of snow accumulation possible across the higher peaks.

On 05/12/24 scattered thunderstorms developed across the eastern plains. Some of these thunderstorms would go on to produce landspouts during the early and mid afternoon hours across Bent and Kiowa Counties. Given no damage, these landspouts will be rated EF-Unknown.

Heavy snow above 6500 feet this morning will decrease this afternoon, though off and on snow showers will continue over the mountains through the day. Expected hazardous travel conditions this morning, with mountain passes remaining slick and snow packed at times through the afternoon.

Here's a look at additional precipitation amounts expected today from lower elevation rain and higher elevation snow across southern Colorado. Some good moisture content is expected in and near the mountains from this storm. Additional rainfall will be possible across the southeast plains Saturday and Sunday for those who have not received much yet.

A cool, cloudy and rainy day expected for the plains, with mountain snow expected for elevations above 8,500ft. Some rumbles of thunder will be possible across the area today as well. This cooler and wetter trend will continue through the weekend.

Orange Flag issued at 6:00 AM today, Monday, May 6th and will expire at 10:00 PM tomorrow, Tuesday, May 7th. No open burn permits will be activated. High winds across the area will severely increase fire danger. Please report any downed power lines or trees that are contacting power lines by calling 911.

Damaging winds and high fire danger will return to southern Colorado today and Wednesday. Freezing temperatures will be possible across El Paso County once the winds die down tonight and tomorrow morning as well. Take necessary precautions. Cooler and less windy weather will return for Thursday into the weekend.

Damaging winds will continue along the southern I-25 corridor through the afternoon. Expect strong cross winds on north south oriented roads. Travel with care!
