Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer events in the nation, with more than 1 million passionate participants supporting the noncompetitive three- to five-mile walks each year. Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most so that no one faces breast cancer alone.

By donating a sign or pinwheel for each loved one who has faced breast cancer, you will help the American Cancer Society find breast cancer’s causes and cures, provide free information and services to those fighting the disease, and ensure access to mammograms for women who need them.

Virginia Unites against cancer - thank you to our volunteers who have signed up to be a part of this campaign. If you would like more information please reach out!

Volunteer to be a Neighborhood Host for the American Cancer Society!

Cancer is relentless. It doesn’t stop for anything. It certainly doesn’t stop for a global pandemic. That is why we can’t stop either and why we need your help. We are in danger of losing a generation of progress in scientific research and a generation of lifesaving cancer treatments if we don’t act now. The end of cancer begins with research, which is why it has always been vital to achieving our mission. Research takes years to come to fruition. A cancer breakthrough begins perhaps 10-20 years earlier. If research is disrupted today, it means lives lost tomorrow.

We need your help to continue to fund our mission of saving lives from cancer. Unite your neighbors, friends and family to show their support to everyone who has faced a cancer diagnosis. We will join together on September 20 and light luminaria in our homes and neighborhoods across Virginia to remember and to honor the people in our lives who have faced cancer. Help us fundraise today so we can all keep hope alive!

As a Neighborhood Host you will:
- Sell 15-25 luminaria (at a suggested donation of $10 each).
- Pass out promotional and sale flyers along your street or neighborhood.
- Deliver luminaria bags and encourage everyone to decorate them.
- Remind donors to set out decorated luminarias on September 20.
- Track and collect luminaria sales and distribute bags to your donors.
- Set a fundraising goal: 20 luminaria averaging $10 donation each = $200 per Host.
- Turn in your donations to your American Cancer Society contact.

This is Oliver Schabenberger's third year as one of the Real Men of the NC Triangle. His life was touched by cancer when his wife, Lisa, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018. Thanks to regular screening, the cancer was detected early and was treated. Now, Oliver is stepping up to fight breast cancer through raising awareness about the importance of screening and early detection.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Detroit

Cancer is a disease that affects everyone, but does not affect everyone equally. Tragically over the past five years, the breast cancer death rate for African American women was almost 25% higher than white women, despite having historically lower incidence rates. The American Cancer Society finds health inequities such as this unacceptable and is dedicated to partnering with the community, lawmakers, and volunteers to fund research that helps identify inequities, remove barriers to care in a sustainable way, and improve access to screenings.

The American Cancer Society currently funds 55 multi-year extramural research grants totaling $46.2 million that are focused on health equity, including grants at the University of Michigan and Wayne State University! #MissionMonday #HealthEquity #AttackingCancer #MakingStridesDetroit #BreastCancer

Gary M. Reedy, CEO of the American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) comments on the death of civil rights champion and U.S. Congressman Rep. John Lewis from pancreatic cancer:

“We are incredibly saddened by the news of Representative Lewis’s passing. On behalf of the entire American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network family, heartfelt condolences go out to Rep. Lewis’s son John-Miles and the entire Lewis family. While we mourn his loss, we celebrate the monumental gift of his life. John Lewis was a pillar of the civil rights movement and an example of how to live a life of service.

“Throughout his life, the civil rights icon fought for freedom, equality, and human rights across countless communities, including for cancer patients, survivors, and their families. He was fiercely committed to racial and social justice, and as part of that work, to making sure access to health care was a basic human right.

“In addition to playing a pivotal role in the civil rights movement, Rep. Lewis had long been a champion of cancer issues from his work on the Atlanta City Council throughout his time in Congress. The congressman recognized racism is a public health issue and was a vocal advocate for the passage of critical patient protections in the Affordable Care Act.

“This year, an estimated 1.8 million Americans, including more than 55,000 Georgians, will be diagnosed with cancer. On behalf of Rep. Lewis and all those who will be diagnosed this year, we will continue to support research that leads to new treatments and therapies and work with our lawmakers at the federal and state level to pass measures that move us closer to a world without cancer.”
