VB Photo Volunteer ....TAKING PHOTOS!!!

Everyone has busy hectic lives. Its hard to keep up with everything that is going on. When it comes to taking photos, nothing can substitute taking the time to shoot. If you have some time and would like to exercise those photo muscles and add to your "10,000 hours", We may be able to help. Volunteering can sometimes get you access that you wouldn't normally have, can get you published, can give you practice, and all in a no lose situation (unlike for hire shoots). Just RSVP an event or leave me a comment. I look forward to working with you!

Mayor Robert M. “Bobby” Dyer and the Mayor’s Veterans Committee hosted the annual Memorial Day Ceremony, Monday, May 27 at noon at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial, 1000 19th St., across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
This annual event is held to honor and pay tribute to the men and women of the armed forces "who gave their all."

As part of the opening ceremony, the Virginia Beach Police Department’s Honor Guard Unit-Rifle Team provided a 21-Gun Salute, followed by the Invocation given by Chaplain David Yemington, Vietnam Veterans of America and Virginia Beach Chapter 969. Music was provided by the United States Air Force Heritage Brass and the National Anthem and “God Bless America” was performed by Tony Zontini of Virginia Beach. Following opening remarks by CDR Edward T. McCarthy, USCGR (Ret.), Mayor Dyer provided the keynote address. Mayor Dyer was sworn in as Mayor on Nov. 20, 2018 and is the first Veteran to be directly elected as mayor in Virginia Beach history. Dyer served in the United States Marine Corps from 1968 to 1972. Before being sworn in as Mayor, Dyer represented the Centerville District for 14 years.

Military commands and organizations were invited to bring wreaths to place at the memorial during the formal ceremony on behalf of their command. The public was also invited to attend. Citizens placed an American flag (provided) around the base of the memorial to honor a relative or friend. The flags will remain in place for one week.

The annual Tidewater Veterans Day Parade at the Oceanfront was hosted by the Hampton Roads Council of Veterans Organizations. More than 100 programs and organizations signed up to march or perform. It featured the U.S. Fleet Forces Band, high and middle school marching bands, honor guards and several local law enforcement agencies. Every branch of the military was represented in the parade, and it featured veterans from every war as far back as World War II.

The Lesner Bridge is one step closer to completion today. The last section of the span was put in place which means both spans of the bridge will be open to traffic come late August. Work will then switch back to the eastbound span of the bridge for sidewalk and green space construction.

The bridge connects Shore Drive across the Lynnhaven Inlet. Many business owners said they are anxious to see the project completed after a more than a year of delay.

The Office of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Brock Environmental Center, commissioned artist, Benjamin Heller for a residency to create Terrapin Basin, this environmentally responsive installation at Pleasure House Point. As a resident artist, Heller will is creating his work on site and be available to the public to demonstrate his process. The City's goal is to use this opportunity to spotlight our natural spaces while creating a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the Chesapeake Bay.

Diamondback terrapins are the only turtle species in North America adapted to survive in brackish water – a mixture of salt and fresh water – like the Lynnhaven River and Chesapeake Bay. Terrapins require sandy beaches which make Pleasure House Point Natural Area's sandy surroundings ideal for nesting.
Terrapin Basin will measure 5' x 7' and be set into the ground creating a basin that invites visitors to explore. The sculpture is constructed from locally sourced sandstone, native to the area, which will be cut, assembled and polished on site. Heller's carving process is similar to the forming of rivers and coastlines – an active process and one that he will share onsite with visitors as the project unfolds.

Heller connects the stone form of his piece with the types of nests that Diamondback terrapins dig to lay their eggs, while bringing attention to how human presence that can threaten their habitat. This piece will serve as an educational experience creating conversation about how all of these elements can co-exist and be preserved.
