🎉Congratulations to the 2020 Kiwanis Club of Chesapeake Scholarship winner from Great Bridge High School Key Club, Gavin!

My name is Gavin and I went to Great Bridge High School. Throughout high school, Key Club has always been my favorite club and has truly made my high school experience amazing. I will always be grateful for the opportunities Key Club provided me as President. From volunteering at the local food bank to marches, we truly felt the impact we were making on the community. Next year I plan to study at the University of Virginia to eventually become a Physician Assistant.

🎉Congratulations to the 2020 Kiwanis Club of Chesapeake Scholarship winner from Deep Creek High School Key Club, Sumama Haque!

My name is Sumama Haque, and I graduated from Deep Creek High School. Throughout high school, I have been a part of several organizations including Spanish Club, National Honor Society, and Key Club. During my senior year, I was president of Key Club and vice president of Spanish Club. In the community, I have volunteered at a hospital, an Islamic school, and the library. This fall, I will attend the University of Virginia, and I plan to major in biology. In the future, I hope to go to medical school in order to become a surgeon.

I have been a member of Key Club for four years, and the experiences I have had will have a lasting impact on me. Volunteering with Key Club has allowed me to give back to my community and my school, and I genuinely enjoyed the work we did. Through Key Club, I have been able to learn important life and leadership skills and grow as a person.

It is with great sadness that we have come to learn of the cancellation of the Capital District Kiwanis Convention this August. While we understand this decision is in the best interest of everyone, we will miss seeing all of our Kiwanis friends!

Despite the cancellation of the District Convention, the Kiwanis Foundation is committed to fundraising for the nine pediatric trauma centers that we support. Therefore, the Kiwanis Foundation is still holding the Ducky Derby and will be mirroring the typical format to the best of our ability, with the exception of the drawing portion. It is with a heavy heart that the Capital District Board announces the cancellation of our District Convention that was to be held August 21-23, 2020 in Richmond, Virginia.

At its May 16, 2020 meeting the Board adopted a resolution declaring a condition of emergency exists because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The board concluded that conducting a convention for the 2019-20 Kiwanis administrative year would be inadvisable and impracticable because of the health threat to Kiwanis members, their families and all individuals traveling to and from the convention.

The District Bylaws include provisions for how to conduct the business of the District which normally happens at the House of Delegates. In accordance with the District Bylaws, the District will be conducting the business of our typical House of Delegates session with the District Delegates-at-Large, which includes District Officers, District Board and Past District Governors.

This meeting will be held on Friday, August 21 at 7 PM and will include the District Governor and Governor-Elect elections, the approval of amendments to the District Bylaws, and the State of the District address. This meeting will be conducted online via GoToMeeting and details will be sent to Delegates-at-Large in early August.

All proposed Bylaws amendments have been posted on the District website and a public online meeting for all Capital Distrct Kiwanis members to discuss the Bylaws amendments will happen in early-August.

A Kiwanis Education Day will take place online on Saturday, August 22nd allowing for the presentation of many of the workshops that would have taken place at our District Convention. The agenda for this education and connection details will be publicized as we get closer to the event. All online presentations will be recorded and published to the District website so that they can be viewed by members at any point.
