Amill arrived at the shelter as a stray, with his friend Fortune (who is also available for adoption). He is a middle-aged guy who weighs about 55 pounds. I am currently fostering him and wanted to share what I have learned.
Amill is 100 percent house trained. He is very well-mannered in the home and has been an excellent house guest. He loves car rides and is super friendly with everyone he meets. He is very affectionate and sweet. He has been perfect with my senior male and female dog, showing no food or toy aggression with them or myself. I imagine he would be great with kids as well. Cats are an unknown, although he does have a very strong prey drive so outdoor cats would be fair game to him. I believe he would make an excellent family dog.
Amill is a velcro dog. He will follow me around everywhere and even bust thru a baby gate if I am on the other side. I crate him when I am not home. He busted out of the crate the first day, so I reinforced it with zip ties and it hasn't been an issue since. He will whine for a few minutes when I first put him in it, but he settles down quickly. At first, I thought he may have a bit of separation anxiety, but as he's become more comfortable here, he's gotten much better. That being said, it would be best if he went to a home where his humans are home more than not.
Amill is a pretty chill and easy-going dog who doesn't require a ton of exercise- I take him on 3 short walks a day. He would probably love a fenced-in backyard to chase squirrels, but a backyard is not required. He won't be your running or hiking buddy but would be great for a more sedentary person looking for a companion and someone to get them out walking a few times a day. He loves hanging out on the couch with his human and sleeping in the bed with them. He isn't super playful, but every once in a while he gets a burst of playfulness where he runs around the house with a toy. He also likes to play tug of war. He has been to the bay several times and has gone swimming. He really enjoyed the beach!
Amill already knew how to use a doggy door, but since he arrived at the shelter as a stray, it's probably best to keep it closed when you're not at home. At first, he was excellent on the leash, but as he's gotten more comfortable here, he's shown some leash aggression towards certain dogs. He also has prey drive so he gets quite excited when he sees a squirrel or rabbit. Amill will also bark at things out the window so it is probably best if he doesn't live in an attached home or apartment.
Amill is an awesome dog and will make an excellent addition to most families. He walked in here like he has always lived here and has been super easy to foster.
If you would like to meet him, call the shelter at 757-385-4444 or you can email his foster mom directly at [email protected].

Mojo! This boy is seeking a special family to claim him as theirs. He is 6 years old. He lived his whole life as a companion to an elderly couple. He had a very sheltered life where he only was inside their home and yard and didn’t go anywhere or meet other people. Sadly, his owners passed on and he is now very overwhelmed and lost without them. He has spent some time here getting to know us and he is slowly making progress and making more friends. He is very overwhelmed but doing his best to be brave. It might take several visits before he warms up to you.

What we have learned is that he LOVES toys!! When out in the yard, he played with every single toy out there. And when he was done with one, he would make a little pile so he knew where they were. He is very agile, and loves to play catch! He seems to know the command for "drop it", but doesn't totally understand the leaving it after you drop it part...so having an extra toy can always be helpful as he gets used to playing with you.

He has not been around other animals or kids so he needs to be the only pet and no kids in his new home. He is housetrained, quiet, and very loyal.

Luna has hit a milestone we never really like celebrating, she has been with us for a year…

Luna is awesome and has been being a great girl in foster care, but she deserves a home of her very own. Take a look at her bio (link in comments) and if she seems like a match we can set up a meeting!

*tuesday 9/14/21 update: she’s still with us and is doing great! We’re still looking for her family*

Hey fam. One of our ACOs picked up this young female pit bull this morning on Old Clubhouse Rd in the Scarborough Square neighborhood. The dog was experiencing a medical crisis of a delicate nature (cw: condition is in the comments). She has been treated but we need to find her owners ASAP. The shelter is no place for her to recover.
