Congratulations to our new ALC Teacher of the Year Paula Hernandez - awarded in a surprise announcement at the annual holiday luncheon. Paula has been teaching at the ALC English Language Acquisition (ELA) program for two years and has been a teacher since 2010 - teaching in Georgia and also Hampton, VA.
Mrs. Hernandez said that it is her students that motivate her.
"I have a 69-year-old student and he's making progress. I am in awe. You can learn at any age, any stage of life."
The ALC staff and students in cooperation with the Marine Toys for Tots organization, collected new toys for children during the holiday season. Last year Toys for Tots collected 91,375 toys that went to 14,761 children just in our area.
TCC's Economics & Finance Professor Marilyn Castro visited our Advanced English class today. Ms. Castro talked to the class about charity, community involvement and career advancement opportunities. She discussed different career paths & requirements other than a 4-year degree. She said she believes volunteering not only benefits those around us, but it also impacts those who are volunteering. Thank you Ms. Castro for sharing your wisdom with our students, as she said, "Your community is not where you were born, but where you live right now."
