The Marine Detachment (MARDET) at the Naval School of Music in Virginia Beach, VA, is comprised of elite Marine Musicians selected from the 10 Marine Bands around the globe. These Marines are appraised and certified instructors who possess vast amounts of professional experience and knowledge in their specific area of subject matter expertise. The MARDET staff provides instruction on Instrumental

Performance, Rehearsal Techniques, Music Theory, Music Arranging, Music History, Ear Training, Improvisation, Drum Majoring and Instrument Repair, as well as Values-Based Leadership through a comprehensive Mentorship Program. The MARDET strives to transform every student who walks through our doors into the best and brightest Marine Musician possible. We do not under any circumstance allow graphic, obscene, explicit or racial comments or submissions nor do we allow comments that are abusive, hateful or intended to defame anyone or any organization.

On October 18th, The Commanding Officer led the Marine Detachment on a motivational run to celebrate the Basic Musician Course Class 23060’s graduation. The Basic Musician Course, Naval School of Music, focuses on developing instrumental performance, music theory, ear training, and drill to prepare these Marines for life in a Marine Band. Six long months performing with ceremonial band, wind ensemble, jazz combo, brass band, and popular music group hone these Marine’s into highly adaptable and capable musicians. On October 16th, the Commanding Officer, Marine Detachment, reenlisted Staff Sergeant Andrew Missler. Staff Sergeant Missler, a native of Norwalk Ohio, is one of the Basic Academic’s Instructors for the Naval School of Music, training entry level Marines and Sailors in basic music theory and ear training. While music is an art form, Staff Sergeant Missler focuses on ensuring his students understand the science of music. Staff Sergeant Missler provides support to the Marine Detachment as the Su***de Prevention Program Coordinator, providing annual training and a resource to Marines needing assistance. On August 30th, Brigadier General Sullivan, Commanding General, Training Command visited the Marine Detachment Little Creek and Naval School of Music to meet the instructors and explore the training environment. Prior to hosting a town hall, he took the opportunity to recognize Staff Sergeant Gabriel Filkins and Staff Sergeant Brooke Bart.

Staff Sergeant Filkins was recognized for his outstanding contributions towards curriculum development as the formal schools manager for the Marine Detachment, as well as, supporting as the interim curriculum developer for the Naval School of Music.

Staff Sergeant Bart was recognized for her selection as FY22 Staff Musician of the Year.

On August 18th, The Marine Detachment platoon competed in a regional field meet led by Marine Forces Command. Competing with Marines from Fleet Forces Atlantic, Marine Forces Command, Marine Forces Northern Command, Marine Security Forces Regiment, Marine Air Control Squadron 24, Marine Aviation Training Support Detachment Oceana, 2nd Network Battalion, and Marine Detachment Dam Neck in pugil sticks, ground fighting, joint light tactical vehicle pull, kayak tug-o-war, swimming relay race, obstacle course, and tug-o-war. Healthy competition amongst the Marines in the Hampton Roads area builds command cohesion, networking, and comradery.

On August 15th, The Marine Detachment Commanding Officer, on behalf of Communication Directorate Field Music, presented Staff Sergeant Brooke Bart with a Noncommissioned Officer Sword in recognition of her selection as the Fiscal Year 22 Staff Musician of the Year. Staff Sergeant Bart is the Flute Instructor for the Naval School of Music and she has also served as the Woodwind Branch Head, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Victim Advocate, a Rehearsal Division Instructor for woodwind based ensembles, and as the Platoon Sergeant. She has invested countless hours mentoring, coaching, and teaching Marines and Sailors from the Naval School of Music and the Marine Detachment, as well as Soldiers with the United States Army School of Music. Congratulations Marine!

The M1859 Marine Noncommissioned Officer Sword, worn by noncommissioned officers and staff noncommissioned officers, was adopted in 1859 and holds the record for oldest unbroken continued service in the United States weapons inventory. However, today it serves only in a drill and ceremony role.

On April 19th, The Commanding Officer of the Marine Detachment, Little Creek presented Staff Sergeant Erich Woolley with the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Sergeant Joshua Godzwa with a Certificate of Commendation, and Sergeant Zachary Lindquist with the Good Conduct Medal (2nd award).

SSgt Woolley received his award for meritorious achievement while serving as Trombone Instrumentalist and Platoon Sergeant for the 3D Marine Aircraft Wing Band, including coordination of 154 funeral and memorial services, arranging 18 pieces for 3 ensembles, supervising 10 Marines in over 300 hours of MOS training, and supervising the professional development, personal welfare, and accountability of the Marines under his charge.

Sgt Godzwa received his award for being nominated for Musician of the Year in 2021 as a member of Marine Band San Diego.

On April 24th, The Commanding Officer of the Marine Detachment, Little Creek presented Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals to Staff Sergeant Brooke Bart and Staff Sergeant Eric Potter.

SSgt Bart received her award for meritorious service while serving as Flute Instructor, Woodwind Branch Head, and Sexual Assault Prevention Response Victim Advocate, including filling an instructor gap for Army flute instrumentalists, directly influencing the requirement of sexual assault prevention response training across the Department of Defense, and consistently providing superior performance on her instrument, resulting in her selection as the 2022 SNCO Musician of the Year.

SSgt Potter received his award for meritorious service while serving as Clarinet Instructor, Woodwind Branch Head, Information Systems Coordinator, and Equal Opportunity Representative, including instruction of 30 entry and advanced level instrumentalists resulting in a 100 percent pass rate, developing Marines over 75 hours of mentorship outside of classroom hours, curriculum creation, and providing over 653 hours of support and 100 percent accountability of information systems technology.

On April 24th, The Marine Detachment, Little Creek bid farewell to MSgt Crowther and SSgt Potter as they move on to their new duty stations.

MSgt Crowther served as the Instrumental Division Head at the Naval School of Music and has been appointed the Marine Barracks Washington Funeral Director in Washington D.C.

SSgt Potter served as Clarinet Instructor at the Naval School of Music and will be going to join the Quantico Marine Band in Quantico, VA.

On April 12th, the Marine Detachment, Little Creek congratulated Staff Sergeant Eric Potter for receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and Staff Sergeant Adam Chandler for receiving a certificate of recognition. SSgt Potter received his Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for superior performance while leading the intranet tech refresh during the replacement of 68 workstations, providing data collection, backup and transfer of data to the flank speed one drive, and exceptional support for active duty and civilian staff.

On March 14th, the Marine Detachment, Little Creek congratulated Staff Sergeant Filkins for receiving an award, Staff Sergeant Missler for receiving his instructor certification for Basic Academics, and Sergeant Young for receiving a letter of commendation.

SSgt Filkins was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for preparing, distributing, and integrating IPads for use in Basic Academics, dedicating over 130 hours converting visual and audio course materials to the new instructional medium.

Sgt Young received a letter of commendation for selection as the Center for Service Support Junior Enlisted Instructor of the Quarter- 1st Quarter FY 2023.

SSgt Frigiola designed and created 91 video products through 270 hours of editing in support of the non-resident Audition Trainer Course. On March 1st, the Commanding Officer of the Marine Detachment, Little Creek presented Sergeant Jessica Hubbell with the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (gold star in lieu of second award) for superior performance of her duties while serving as French horn instrumentalist, section leader, and platoon sergeant for the 2D Marine Division Band. Sgt Hubbell performed in over 90 commitments, facilitated over 600 hours of sectional rehearsals, devoted over 300 hours of off-duty time to give one-on-one lessons, and was responsible for the accountability of 45 Marines in her platoon. On December 1st, the Commanding Officer of the Marine Detachment, Little Creek presented awards to Staff Sergeant Adam Dippre and Sergeant Joseph Tutor.

SSgt Dippre was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for superior performance of his duties as a trombone instrumentalist with the Marine Corps Quantico Band where he performed in over 230 commitments for a combined audience of over two million and maintained 100% accountability of 53 Marines as platoon sergeant.

Sgt Tutor was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for serving as the assistant enlisted conductor and clarinet instrumentalist with the 3D Marine Aircraft Wing Band where he performed duties and responsibilities normally executed by a gunnery sergeant, including leading the unit in 50 military and civilian ceremonies and events reaching an audience of over 40,000 and conducting 10 challenging compositions in 4 high-visibility performances. On January 10th, Master Sergeant Crowther was presented a certificate of recognition for selection as the Naval School of Music Senior Enlisted Instructor of the Quarter (4th Quarter 2022) for her leadership, technical expertise, and personal contribution to mission accomplishment.

SSgt Geary was presented a letter of commendation for his selection as Center for Service Support Domain Mid-Grade Enlisted Military Instructor of the 4th Quarter FY 2022. As Advanced Academics Conducting Instructor he delivered 97 hours of instruction to 24 mid-level students, cross-certified as an Instrumental Division Trombone Instructor, and supervised 68 fitness evolutions for the Marine Detachment.

Sgt Young was presented the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for superior performance as Tuba Instructor, delivering 193 hours of instruction to 27 students, administering 55 instrumental assessments, and leading 60 fitness evolutions resulting in Sgt Young being named the Naval School of Music 2022 Junior Enlisted Instructor of the Year.

Additionally, Sgt Young was selected as the Naval School of Music Junior Enlisted Instructor of the Quarter (4th Quarter 2022 and 1st Quarter 2023).

On January 3rd, the Commanding Officer of the Marine Detachment, Little Creek promoted Gunnery Sergeant Matthew Phagan to the rank of Master Sergeant and presented him with the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.

MSgt Phagan received his award for meritorious service as the Head of Instrumental Division, Euphonium Instructor, Curriculum Developer, and Training Chief, supervising 13 instructors through 845 instrumental assessments and 1,800 hours of individual instruction of 189 students, revising NAVSOMINST 1300.1A, and revising the Audition Trainer Course.

On 10 November, the Marine Detachment, Little Creek celebrated the 247th birthday of the Marine Corps! The celebration featured speeches from the Marine Detachment, Little Creek’s Commanding Officer - CWO4 Davis and our Guest of Honor - MGySgt (Ret.) Farquhar. The ceremony was conducted by MSgt Crowther as the narrator, GySgt Splitter as the Adjutant, staff from the Marine Detachment as the sword detail, current basic music students as the cake detail, and the U.S. Fleet Forces Band providing musical support.

Special thanks to our Guest of Honor- MGySgt (ret) Farquhar, the U.S. Fleet Forces Band, and the organizers of the ball: GySgt Medina, GySgt Davenport, SSgt Kitzen-Abelson, and SSgt Bart. Happy Birthday Marines!
