Set up and operate communications systems

Encode and decode messages

Assist in the preparation of fire support plans, coordinates and targets

Determine target locations using computers or manual calculations

Inspecting, servicing, maintaining, repairing, replacement, adjusting and testing of wheeled vehicles and material handling equipment systems, subsystems and components

Service automotive electrical systems including wiring harness, and starting and charging systems

Perform wheeled vehicle recovery operations

Currently, the Virginia National Guard has around 300 Soldiers, Airmen and members of the Virginia Defense Force supporting response efforts to the Coronavirus pandemic. Those personnel are helping with a variety of missions, including providing logistical support at mobile testing sites, working with our state partners to package much-needed supplies for movement and assisting with medical and logistics planning.

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the Lynchburg-based 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment provide logistics support to the Montgomery County Public Health Task Force drive-thru testing site March 31, 2020. The site is part of the regional COVID-19 public health response and is closed to the public. Only those individuals with a letter of authorization from the Virginia Department of Health’s New River Health District will be allowed access to the site with an appointment to receive appropriate testing, assessment and referral services.

Virginia National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 276th Engineer Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group assist the Virginia Department of Emergency Management prepare supplies for delivery March 25, 2020. Approximately 100 Soldiers, Airmen and members of the Virginia Defense Force are directly supporting Virginia’s COVID-19 response with medical and logistics planning, and additional personnel are providing mission command and logistics support for the VNG itself.

The infantry is the main land combat force and fighting foundation of the National Guard. They are responsible for defending our country against any threat by land, as well as capturing, destroying and repelling enemy ground forces.

JOB DUTIES

Perform as a member of a fire team during drills and combat

Aid in the mobilization of vehicles, troops and weaponry

Assist in reconnaissance missions

Process prisoners of war and captured documents

Use, maintain and store combat weapons (e.g., rifles, machine guns, antitank mines, etc.)

OVERVIEW
Motor transport operators are primarily responsible for supervising or operating wheel vehicles to transport personnel and cargo. They are the backbone of the Army’s support and sustainment structure, providing advanced mobility on and off the battlefield.

JOB DUTIES

Operate all wheel vehicles and equipment over varied terrain and roadways

Manage load, unload and safety of personnel being transported

Oversee and check proper loading and unloading of cargo on vehicles and trailers

Employ convoy defense techniques

Identify, correct or report all vehicle deficiencies

Prepare vehicle for movement/shipment by air, rail or vessel

TRAINING
Ten weeks of Basic Combat Training and six weeks of Advanced Individual Training. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in simulation, yet more than 200 training hours are spent in actual vehicles and field training environments.

Advanced Individual Training: 6 weeks, 3 days at Fort Leonard Wood, MO

HELPFUL SKILLS

Interest in driving and mechanics
