Last week, several members of our staff had the honor of attending a funeral for one of our Public Guardianship clients. Barnabas, “Billy” Baker was 100 years old and served honorably in the US Army during WWII. He also served as mayor of Portsmouth from 1958 to 1960 and was known as a popular historian for the city. Billy survived COVID earlier this summer, and died of an unrelated cause in late September.

Sue, his guardianship case manager searched records to find out where the love of his life (his wife who had died years ago) was buried, and found his family had a large plot in a historic cemetery. On October 30th, he was buried with full military honors next to his late wife in a beautiful ceremony. We are proud to be a small part of his wonderful life.

Happy Feel Good Friday! At CCEVA we are often graced with the opportunity to witness our previous clients paying it forward. These children's sweaters were hand knitted by a past Financial and Housing client who received financial assistance. The client explained that she wanted to show her appreciation by using her gifts to create a blessing for the next CCEVA client in need. How inspiring!

Tell us in the comments how you like to #payitforward.

Catholic Charities wanted to give a special shout out to one of our long-time volunteers, Carol. She has been packing layettes for our Pregnancy Support Program for over 10 years and is such a gift to our agency. When Carol's fellow volunteers had to stop coming in because of Covid-19, she started coming in multiple times a week to single-handedly keep up the donation center. Thank you for all you do for mothers in need. We love you Carol!

Way to go Premier Millwork and Lumber Co., Inc. and board member George Melnyk!

Mike and the crew learn a thing or two this week when they touch down in Virginia Beach, VA to meet Trish O'Brien and George Melynk Jr. With the shift to remote learning, Trish realized that there was a desperate need for children to have their own space at home to do school work that wasn't on the floor, a bed, or crammed at a kitchen table. So she jumped into action and teamed up with local mill owner, George Melynk Jr. to help fabricate and gift over 600 desks to the students in their community.

It has been an extremely busy seven months since COVID-19 rocked our Foodbank world and changed our operations for the foreseeable future. We could not have been successful with our low/no contact modifications without wonderful community partners who assisted us in our volunteer efforts and our mass drive-thru mobile pantries serving hundreds of households at a time. Most of these organizations continue to support our mobile pantry sites every month. We are incredibly thankful for their accommodations. They are true #HungerHeroes. #FeedingAmerica

Our Story

Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia (CCEVA) was founded in 1932 as the Norfolk Bureau of Catholic Charities to care for widows, orphaned and abandoned children. More than eighty years later, our mission has expanded to include services for all people in need in five main areas: Youth & Family Services, Financial and Housing Counseling (including financial assistance), Mental Health Counseling, Health and Community Services and Senior Services. We serve people of every race, creed, ethnicity and religion (80% of our clients are not Catholic). Field offices cover a region spanning the Eastern Shore of Virginia, South Hampton Roads, the Peninsula, Williamsburg, York County and the Northern Neck, with a total population of over 1.6 million.

Can anyone please help with anything they can, please?? God bless!!
Well today has been a very hard day. I went to GAP Group today and was told the heart of the program Ms Milcah Wade was NO LONG with the group or should I say employed by Catholic Charities. The group was given NO REASON, just she is NO longer employed there. I have no idea what the problem is but I just want you to know you lost a jewel. Ms Wade was on her job 7 days a week 24 hours a day. Meaning she was always available a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear a smile when you needed it. Again I have know idea what happened, but please know the grandparents at Monroe School is heart broken. There is so much more to be said but I am so full I can't. God put Ms. Wade in our lives and there she will stay. God will send her through nothing that He will not bring her through. I have been with GAP every since the program was started with Mrs. Minnie Thomas Kathy Dial was good but Mrs. Wade was another Mrs. Minnie Thomas. Blessings and love sent to whom ever this message should be sent to. Respectfully Betty Clark.
Wanted to give a huge shoutout to Rebekah Hall. She worked with us to perform a home study for our adoption. She was so so helpful. She was super nice and was always available if we needed her. Thank you so much.
