Welcome back to ! We wanted to start to explore the history of one of our favorite departments within the library: our Adult Literacy program! 📚🥰
The Literacy Volunteers - Campbell County Public Library (LV-CCPL) is (& has always been!) a volunteer-driven, adult literacy program, which has served the needs of low-literacy & limited-English students since 1988! For almost 40 years, the group has striven to meet the learning needs of the adult population in & around Campbell County. Its mission is simple, but important: to provide free, personalized literacy & English language instruction to adults in our community!
As you can see, since its inception in the 80s, the program has been working hard to get both students interested in learning & tutors to come and help support the mission! They've remained dedicated to keeping the location, books & materials, the tutoring service, & the tutor training completely FREE for both the student & the tutor. Even today it remains both free & easy for interested students & tutors to sign up & get going with the program: all you need is the time & dedication to helping others to tutor, or the want or need to learn how to read or speak English to become a student. We love these articles from the 90s written by former Literacy director Becky Olsen (she's currently one of our Trustees now!) that highlight the importance of literacy & the true needs & challenges that individuals who cannot read might face.
We'll be getting into more Literacy history & memories over the next few weeks as we get ready for their big "Around the World" event on June 18th! 🌎 Join us next Thursday for more fun for
