Walnut Creek Pickleball Club

Mission: Pickleball is a raquet sport which combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. The sport is played on a court with the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court. The net is mounted two inches lower than a tennis net. The game is played with a hard paddle and a polymer wiffle ball.

Update on Albany :

Seasons Greetings!

Little did I imagine a year ago today that in 12 months we would have 3 additional pickleball venues (Bushrod, Cedar Rose and Kenney Park) totaling 10 courts, with prospects for 8 dedicated courts (Ocean View) on the horizon. (See details below.)

OCEAN VIEW
At last Thursday's Albany Parks and Open Space Commission meeting there was a short discussion of pickleball, as a line item on their 2019-2021 Work Plan. They have formed a subcommittee to assess the public input (from pickleball and tennis players) and make a recommendation to the commission.

PICKLEBALL WILL BE ON THE AGENDA OF THE JANUARY 9th MEETING (7-9pm). PLEASE SAVE THE DATE!

I cannot stress enough how much influence the emails from the public will have on this decision. I know that before the September meeting our group had submitted about 100 emails versus 9 from tennis players objecting to the conversion. After the meeting, emails from both sides continued to flow in -- one commissioner cited a total of 300. Unforturnately, these later messages have never been published, so we don't know the current ratio of pro-conversion versus anti-conversion messages. Nevertheless, I have been assured that the commissioners have received and read all of the messages.

IF YOU HAVE NEVER WRITTEN TO ALBANY, it's really vital that you do so -- even if you never intend to play there. PLEASE make an easy New Year's Resolution to do this for the pickleball community. Send your message to [email protected]. It can simply say "I support the pickleball court conversion at Ocean View" or you can expand, mentioning your age, and how pickleball has made an impact on your life.

If the commission approves the court conversion, the next step will be to have the project included in the CIP (Capital Improvement Plan), which will be presented to the City Council for approval in March.

Let's look at the year in review*
December 20: Bushrod Grand Opening! Bushrod is one of the big success stories of the year -- I hear nothing but great comments about the friendly community that has evolved there in 2019.
February 13: Pickleball players show up at Albany Parks and Open Spaces Commission Meeting to begin lobbying for Ocean View conversion
March 28: Ocean View Storage Box installed (finally!)
April 3: We give presentation to Berkeley Parks and Waterfront Commission advocating pickleball courts in Berkeley. Prior to the meeting, 65 pickleball players send emails in support of pickleball.
June 12: Pickleball players meet $2,500 fundraising goal for Cedar Rose pickleball, allowing work to begin in July
June and July: Pickleball Ladder League at Castro Park to benefit Ocean View court conversion raises $4,300
August 3: Opening Day for 4 permanent pickleball courts at Cedar Rose Park in Berkeley. Location, location, location! Newcomers who have been drawn to pickleball simply by passing by and seeing it in action have nearly doubled our mailing list!
September 12: We give presentation to Albany Parks and Open Space Commission outlining the need for the Ocean VIew court conversion. Prior to the meeting, 100+ pickleball players send emails in support of the proposal.
October 26: Steve Seskin does fund-raising concert for Ocean View court conversion, raising $1,500. This brings our fund-raising fund up to $9,400 for the Ocean View conversion.
December 12: Albany Parks and Open Spaces Commission agrees to review the pickleball court conversion proposal in its January meeting.
December 20: Join the Bushrod gang in celebrating their one-year anniversary at Bushrod from 1-3pm!
December 31 (prediction): Pickleball players, their friends, neighbors and families make and fulfill New Year's Resolutions to write to Albany Parks and Open Spaces commission to overwhelm them with support for the Ocean View conversion. Spend 5 minutes writing this email now to spare yourself from having to wait for a court to become available every time you play! Send to [email protected].

In looking back on the year, how many new friends have you made through pickleball in 2019? For many of us, that may be the biggest thing to be thankful for this year.

*I probably missed some things, and this does NOT include the achievements in other parts of Oakland, Alameda and Piedmont by Darlene Vendegna and others.
All of the above was accomplished thru donations and emails from pickleball players. It also helps to have cities willing to listen. In addition, the relentless lobbying and coordinating done by Bill Powning and Debra Bernhardt were major factors in moving things forward. Finally, many more people stepped up to volunteer as the need arose. We truly have a great community!

May your games be merry and bright, and may all your pickleballs be white (or green or yellow or orange),

Cathy Taruskin

I will be traveling to the bay area thanksgiving weekend. Will there be play times the morning of 11/28 to 11/30. Would love to burn some off some thanksgiving calories...
Has anybody seen a Kyle Yates and Belinda Zbinden autographed prokennex paddle on the pickleball courts at Rudgear Park? I think I accidentally exchanged my autographed paddle with somebody else's prokennex paddle when I was playing with Milo, Suzanne and 1 other gentleman the other day. By the way, I had a great time playing with you! The paddle has a lot of sentimental value to me so if anybody has seen it or knows who I accidentally exchanged prokennex paddles with, please message them and let me know too. I'm planning to come to play again at Rudgear park this morning. See you on the courts!
Hello Everyone, We are trying to get more PB outdoors courts in Vallejo! We could get as many as 16 courts! These are underutilized tennis courts at the Castlewood Park that can be revitalized with PICKLEBALL! Let's bring LIFE to the area! Deadline to sign is June 13th! We need your help to sign this petition! Here it is the link http://chng.it/fLTc6yYCns Thanks for you support!
Pickleball hits mass market. Maybe? Costco in Concord and Danville.
Any indoor pickleball this weekend? I've been wanting to try the sport for several weeks now, but it keeps raining on the weekend!
Do you all have drop in times. We get to Walnut Creek a couple of times a month on the weekends mostly. We'd love to play when we are in Walnut Creek.
Hi fellow Pickleballers! I am looking for a little help from my friends! My wife and I are both Physical Therapists. We will be working in Walnut Creek, CA for 3 months (July-August-September) as a short term contract, and we are looking for a place to stay. If you know of anyone who would be interested in renting out a bedroom to us in Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill/Concord area, please let me know! I appreciate any help! Looking forward to hearing from you! Noe
