Did you know Main Street Walterboro is part of the National Main Street program, a movement launched in 1977 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation to help revitalize historic downtowns across America?

The original pilot program focused on understanding why downtown districts were struggling and identifying long-term solutions for preservation and economic growth. What they discovered was that successful downtown revitalization depends on:

✅ Strong public-private partnerships
✅ Dedicated organizations and leadership
✅ A full-time program manager
✅ Commitment to quality design
✅ Consistent promotional programming
✅ A coordinated, step-by-step approach

These principles became the foundation of the Main Street Approach still used in communities nationwide today — including right here in Walterboro.
