** TODAY IS THE DAY!! - Emergency Alert Test at Noon **

Lane County Emergency Management will test the subscriber-based local emergency alert system – Lane Alerts – on Thursday, May 14, at 12:00 p.m. The test will include emails, recorded voice calls and text messages depending upon each subscriber’s provided contact information.

“Our annual Lane Alerts test is an important part of making sure our community is ready and able to receive critical alerts in the event of an emergency,” said Lane County Emergency Manager Monica Larcom. “We hope every resident in Lane County chooses to sign up and participate in the Lane Alerts system. It’s the first tool responders request when there is an urgent need to share life-safety information with large numbers of community members. Testing Lane Alerts during National Wildfire Awareness Month helps us all keep wildfire preparedness in mind as we head into fire season.”

Residents should go to www.LaneAlerts.org to create a free Lane Alerts account and select where and how they would like to receive emergency alerts.

If the weather forecast is to be believed (and yes, this is Oregon), we’re apparently headed for a stretch of lovely days—70s, no less!

If that inspires you to get out on the water, please WEAR A LIFE JACKET. Lifejackets can be borrowed at local businesses - https://www.mckenziefireor.gov/life-jacket-lending-program

And for those of us spending our sunshine wrestling weeds or “just doing a quick burn” in the yard—remember that all burning needs to be well managed. Things are already pretty crispy out there, as this year’s small collection of escaped burns would gladly remind us.

Let’s make sure the only thing spreading this week is good vibes. 🌞🔥🚫

🇺🇸 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend 🇺🇸

Today, we honor and remember the brave firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

We stand with their families, loved ones, and fellow firefighters—today and always.

Gone, but never forgotten.

National Library Week was last week, so we may be a bit late—but we couldn’t miss the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the Leaburg Library and its incredible group of dedicated volunteers. Great work!

Since we’re talking about the library, here’s a fun fact: McKenzie Fire & Rescue owns this former school building. The upper floor is home to the Leaburg Library, while much of the downstairs space is used for firefighter training. This unique arrangement allows crews to conduct safe, realistic training scenarios, such as filling the building with simulated smoke using a fog machine and practicing search-and-rescue operations.

Thanks to grants from organizations like the Ford Family Foundation and the Roundhouse Foundation, along with local support from the Bottle Boys, many ongoing maintenance and improvement projects are completed at little to no cost to the District or local taxpayers.

It’s National Library Week, and these are some of the volunteers waiting to assist you. Our library is completely staffed by volunteers allowing us to provide services for free

We don’t often get the chance to see how the people we care for are doing after our work is done.

This past Friday, however, McKenzie Fire & Rescue personnel—along with personnel from Eugene Springfield Fire—were grateful to share a very special moment when we reunited with one of those patients.

Teagan was involved in a very serious motor vehicle accident, and the sheer magnitude of the injuries she sustained required a truly coordinated effort from bystanders, first responders, and physicians to stabilize her and begin the road to recovery.

It meant so much for the involved crews to see you again under much better circumstances and to witness just how far you’ve come. Teagan, your strength, resilience, and progress are truly inspiring, and it was an honor to see you doing so well.

*This post was meant to share a heartfelt story, but unfortunately some comments did not reflect that spirit and took away from celebrating Teagan. To keep the focus where it belongs, comments have been turned off.

*Volunteer Appreciation Week*

A huge thank you to all McKenzie Fire & Rescue volunteers for the countless hours you dedicate to training and emergency response. Your commitment often means time away from your families and personal lives, and that sacrifice does not go unnoticed.

We are also deeply grateful to the families who support our volunteers and make it possible for them to serve and protect our community. Your generosity and understanding are truly appreciated.
