Rest In Peace to Mr. Joe Ennesser, a staple in our community for many decades. 🙏🏼 Most recently, we honored Mr. Ennesser for his service to our town by naming him Greenway Chairman Emeritus. He will be missed, but his legacy will live on as we continue to expand our parks and trail network. My Thoughts and Prayers are with his wife, Eileen, and family.

Wappinger 2020 budget comes in under tax cap - Mid Hudson News

"As we conclude the town budget process for 2020, I am proud that our town board was, once again, able to remain under the two percent tax cap. By closely monitoring spending, and creating efficiencies within departments, we were again able to maintain tax rates that are among the lowest in Dutchess County.”

TOWN OF WAPPINGER – The Wappinger Town Board has passed the 2020 budget with only one “no” vote coming from Councilwoman Angela Bettina. The $16.8 million spending plan includes money for the expansion of parks and recreation programming, improvements to the recycling center, and more road rep...

If you ever wondered about the vacant gas station at the corner of Route 9 and Old Hopewell Road....

This cold case that follows breaks my heart

Well ....I guess they all do really :(

48 years ago tonight Leonard Monette was working the night shift at a Wappingers falls Texaco station when his life came to a violent end ....his killer has never been found .

It was the night of November 17, 1971 , a Wednesday evening at the Texaco station on route 9 and old hopewell road , at the time it was also known as Eddies Service center

While it wasn't a particularly busy evening , the customers that did stop by were met with an open sign , an open door to the station waiting area and well lit pumps , Yet no attendent could be found . The customers then drove to the nearby Bobs shell Station and told the attendant there that Eddies was wide open but no one was there .

The attendant at Bobs knew that it was past the usual closing time for Eddies so he told a friend that was visiting him to "go over there and check things out " ....when the friend also came back stating that the station was indeed open yet there was no attendant ...they called the Fishkill state police baracks to report the attendant missing .

The police would waste no time in realizing this was a robbery gone wrong . The cash register was empty and they would then find Leonard in a back storage room of the station .

Sadly that was where the devoted husband and father of five lost his life ..... on a cold , dark stock room floor in the rear of the building . The 54 year old had been stabbed with a screw driver and beaten about his head .

Several leads were followed up on yet the case remains unsolved

The photos that follow are of the station then , the station now and the sketch of the person of interest in the murder of Leonard Monette

If you hold the key to solving this crime you are urged to contact the Wappingers BCI unit at (845)677-7300. Thank you !!

Thank you Joe, for your 20+ years of service to our town. Your passion for the Wappinger Greenway Trail network was second to none!

During last night’s Regular Meeting of the Town Board, Supervisor Richard L. Thurston and the Wappinger Town Board recognized Joseph Ennesser who has selflessly dedicated over 4 decades of his life to improving the quality of life here in the Town of Wappinger. Joe officially retired from his post as Chairman of the Wappinger Greenway Trail Committee last night after serving 20 years in that position. Joe was the driving force for initiatives such as starting the Greenway Trail network, securing a home for the Sports Museum of Dutchess County, the construction of the Chelsea Boat Launch, and many others. He was inducted into the Dutchess County Sports Hall of Fame and was also the first Grand Marshall in the Town of Wappinger Community Day. We thank Joe for his years of service to our community.

Wappinger standoff ends after 7 hours with man in custody

My personal thanks to the New York State Police, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, and the multiple law enforcement agencies that responded to this extremely dangerous situation on Marlorville Road. Through the professionalism of these agencies working together, this situation was resolved without further incident and no one lost their lives.

Having previously lived on Marlorville Road for almost 12 years, my thoughts were with the residents of this community last night, many of whom I know personally. They were kept safe by the many troopers, deputies, and police officers who responded to this scene - very quickly - arriving on a very chaotic scene and literally, putting their lives on the line to protect our residents and community.

The Town of Wappinger is very fortunate to have both a New York State Police barracks and a Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office substation in our town, staffed by dedicated professionals who serve our town. We are also fortunate to have the nearby Village of Wappingers Falls Police Department, who never hesitate to assist during critical situations and when back up is needed or requested.

Thank you also to EMStar/Town of Wappinger Ambulance, our Hughsonville Fire Department, and the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response for their assistance for the duration of this situation.

A state police trooper was "grazed by a bullet" in Wappinger, according to Town Supervisor Richard Thurston.

Incredible!... they started in Newburgh, 600-700 feet below the Hudson River, and ended up in Wappinger. With incredible engineering and unparalleled skill, the crews digging the NYC DEP by-pass tunnel have broken through! #EngineeringMarvel

COMING THROUGH!

Another video from our milestone occasion this month, completing excavation of the Delaware Aqueduct Bypass Tunnel. Once the tunnel is mined, it is tradition for workers to open a hatch, crawl through the head of the machine, and grab a handshake on the other side.

They started their work day in Newburgh and ended in Wappinger. A job well done!

On this date 144 years ago, in 1875, the New York State legislature officially created the “Town of Wappinger”. Residents of what was then the northern portion of the Town of Fishkill petitioned the State to create its own separate town. Wappinger, the youngest town in Dutchess County, has seen much growth, heroism, and success over the course of our history. Happy 144th Birthday Wappinger!!

Here’s a part of our town that many will never see.... 600 under feet below the ground!

Did you know that 500-600 million gallons of New York City’s drinking water flows under our town each day?? #Incredible

We thought it would be fun to end the week by bringing our followers more than 600 feet below ground in the Town of Wappinger. That's where DEP is working on the eastern terminus of the Delaware Aqueduct Bypass Tunnel, our $1 billion project to repair leaks in the longest tunnel in the world.

Our tunnel boring machine started to excavate bedrock for the 2.5-mile-long bypass tunnel in 2017. It started in Newburgh, headed north for a bit, and then began pushing eastward toward Dutchess County. Excavation for the tunnel is about 70 percent finished.

The photos here show workers preparing to receive the tunnel boring machine on the east side of the Hudson River and connect the new bypass tunnel to structurally sound portions of the Delaware Aqueduct.

More information about each photo can be found in their captions. And more information about the project can be found at the link below:

Central Hudson - Report a Streetlight Out

During the fall and winter months, at the request of town residents, and in response to the tragic loss of a resident that was struck by a car on Route 9, I have worked with Central Hudson to improve street lighting at key intersections and on some of our heavily traveled roadways. A number of new LED street lights have been installed. If you have questions about street lighting, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at [email protected].

If you would like to report a street light that is not functioning, please see below...

Help keep our communities safe. To report an outage or other issue, please complete the required fields below in order to request streetlight repair. Entering a pole number aids in expediting the repair process. We will assign this repair to a crew that is scheduled to do some other work in the area...
