January 2020

Professional Achievements

Kelly Mousseau, a first grade teacher, applied and was accepted into a year long certification program with Mindful Schools. Upon completion she will be a registered Mindfulness teacher with Mindful Schools and ready to share her experiences and skills with children k-12.

Gayhead Programs, Events, & Celebrations

The Gayhead PE department is proud to say the many of our students set a Guinness Book of World Records for the "Most People Cup Stacking in one day at Multiple Locations", when we participated in World Stack Up day on November 14th. We are also very excited to announce that due to popular demand, the WCSD PE department just confirmed that the date for the 3rd annual WCSD Sport Stacking Tournament will be held on Thursday, March 12 at Van Wyck JHS. The final details and registration procedure will be sent to all the schools in February.

Creative Classrooms

Sue Sonnenberg and Kelly Mousseau had a fantastic opportunity to have a Gayhead parent, who happens to teach science, come into their classrooms to teach a lesson on light! The children did experiments to explore and investigate how light travels. The students had a great time!

Professional Achievements

Kelly Mousseau, first grade teacher, was recently accepted into the Mindful Schools Teacher Certification Program which will start in January 2020 and end in July 2021. The goal of this program is to support both deepening a personal practice of mindfulness, as well as deepening the practice of teaching mindfulness to students both in the classroom and in the mindfulness program after school.

Gayhead Programs, Events, & Celebrations
Mrs. Misch and Mrs. Granuzzo celebrated as reading buddies today with a cookie swap and holiday books! Fun and friendship was had this holiday season!

Gayhead second grade students attended a showing of The Nutcracker at the Bardavon Theater in Poughkeepsie on Friday, December 13th. On this trip, students learned about proper theater behavior, while enjoying a classic holiday show!

The last two weeks before the holiday break, the entire school participated in a holiday sing-along to celebrate the many traditions and cultures of the Gayhead community. Many of the primary grades decorated headbands, wore antlers and got a chance to play instruments while participating on stage with Mrs. Banda and Mrs. Amato. Even the staff got on the stage to sing “Let It Snow”. Fun was had by all!

Community Outreach
To show kindness throughout the month of December, Gayhead families and staff gathered mittens, hats, gloves, scarves, socks and ear muffs to donate to the local women and childrens’ shelter. The donations were made in honor of Ann Hack, who organized this wonderful act for many years but retired last year.

● Jill Valentino, Gayhead AIS math teacher had her writing featured in both the print and online issues of Hudson Valley Parent magazine this month. For the March issue, Jill contributed an essay titled “Does Your Child Have OCD?” which also featured the contributions of Jennifer Colucci, Gayhead 4th grade teacher. The article can be accessed online at https://hvparent.com/obsessive-compulsive-disorder.

● Kelly Hanna, Gayhead 1st grade teacher, ran a 5K race over the Poughkeepsie Walkway on March 16th in support of the Matt Herring Foundation. This grassroots organization was formed to spread addiction awareness and give a voice to the Addict’s family so they can be heard and their needs met. The Foundation seeks to provide information, resources, and support to those who find themselves in this crisis. For more information, visit their website at https://mattherringfoundation.org.

● Jennifer Colucci, Gayhead 4th grade teacher and co-founder of The Mommy Dash helped plan, organize, and execute a spectacular event on March 10, Mom University, and it was a huge success! Over 100 moms from all over the Hudson Valley attended to laugh, learn, and be inspired. When moms take time for themselves, everyone benefits!

● Gayhead Went Red! On February 1, Gayhead teachers and staff wore red to kick off American Heart Month! The goal of American Heart Month is to raise awareness about heart disease and how people can prevent it — both at home and within their communities.

Jennifer Colucci, Gayhead 4th grade teacher, along with two other local moms, has been working hard to bring Mom University to the Hudson Valley. This event will take place at Locust Grove in Poughkeepsie on March 10th. Information and tickets are available at www.themomuniversity.com. Mom University is an exclusive and engaging all-day event designed to motivate moms to master motherhood! Specially designed for Moms by Moms, this one-of-a-kind event will be packed with inspiring speakers, spa services, a Mom Marketplace, and more! Our mission is simple: to arm moms with practical solutions to everyday problems with the goal of making life easier for them and to provide Moms with a supportive space to relax, recharge, and learn how to thrive not just in motherhood, but in life. This year’s conference theme is “Living with Intention.” So, save the date and make a plan to PUT YOURSELF FIRST for a change!

School Events
Mr. Sean Keenan and Mrs. Jen Colucci's 4th-grade classes collected candy donations and put together 350 treat bags for delivery to the families of Sparrow's Nest this week for Valentine's Day! Sean and Jen have done this every year for the past four years and it's a great way for students to experience hands-on involvement in a local charitable cause.

On February 1st, the Gayhead community showed their support for heart health by dressing in red. February is Heart Health Month, and Gayhead Elementary School participated in not only raising money for the cause but also spreading awareness regarding the importance of living a ‘healthy heart lifestyle!’

● Mrs. Dawson's and Mrs. Hack's first-grade students made ornaments for the Christmas tree located inside the East Fishkill Town Hall. The students decorated holiday foam shapes, made candy canes using beads and pipe cleaners, and created reindeer faces out of wooden craft sticks. Community members were able to admire the decorations throughout the duration of this past holiday season. Additionally, the students' hard work was appreciated by those who work in the town hall as well.

● This holiday season, the Gayhead School community displayed their generosity once again. In all, we collected 73 pairs of gloves, 14 sets of hats and gloves, 35 hats, and 9 scarves that were donated to a local organization that cares for people affected by domestic violence situations. This was our second year of working with this organization. Donation recipients appreciated our help in keeping them warm during the cold winter months. Through being involved in these activities, we continue to develop the character traits that show... other people matter.

News from Brinckerhoff: Every year, it is such an honor to display this bulletin board in our main lobby. Breast cancer has affected many families in our own community. Statistics show that 1 in 8 US women will develop invasive breast cancer over her lifetime. This year was very special because the phrase I came up with 5 years ago “THINK PINK WITH BRINCK” was printed onto T-shirts. The sales of the t-shirts raised $690 and the proceeds went to Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation. Gina Carrigan

BREAKING: State Education Dept. In No Rush To Secure WCSD Schools. They wouldn't return calls or emails so I showed up at their offices. WATCH & SHARE the VIDEO then call or email Stephen McNally at State Ed. and tell him to prioritize school safety. There are a lot of things we need to do to make our school children safe. Security vestibules of the sort WCSD is attempting to install are a good start. Albany bureaucrats need to lead, follow or get the hell out of the way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z__VSjIqwMA
