Coaches, players feeling sting of recruiting in the pandemic

With limited points of contact and ways to view student-athletes, coaches and players have had to find unique ways of selling themselves to each other. No camps or clinics, no on-campus visits, no facility tours. Just Zoom meetings, virtual campus visits, taped games and coach presentations. It’s been a challenge.

METRO DETROIT — As the pandemic nears a year of existence in the United States, college coaches and prospective players have started to feel its burn.

The De La Salle Pilots will face Oak Park in a MHSAA Division 2 playoffs state semifinal football game set for noon tomorrow at the school’s campus in Warren.
At a special session held at 4 p.m. today, the Warren City Council voted 5-1 to amend a consent judgment with De La Salle Collegiate that will permit the teams to play the one-off game at the school’s athletic field on Common Road, between Schoenherr and Hayes roads.
The Pilots have played their home games at Wayne State University since 2014.
After pressure from residents concerned about traffic and noise in the neighborhood, the school’s plans for renovations at the field became the subject of a lawsuit with the city in 2018. Litigation ended with the consent judgment that included several conditions, including a ban on varsity football games at the site.
Attendance for the game on Jan. 16 is limited to 250 people under the amendment to the agreement approved by the council. The game will be subject to all state protocols and restrictions for athletics related to COVID-19.
