Leaps & Bounds Family Services This page is to keep all of our participants and volunteers updated on what's going on with Leaps and Bounds.
Leaps & Bounds Family Services was established in 1988, as the Poverty and Social Reform Institute. The name change occurred in 2003. We are a private, non profit 501C3 tax exempt organization, supported through individual and corporate contributions, United Way support, foundation grants, government contracts and fees for service. Since it's inception, Leaps & Bounds has provided early literacy and parenting through on site and home based programming, services for school-aged youth, and services for adults. Leaps & Bounds is open to all individuals. We have offices in northwest Detroit and south Warren.

Great Start to Quality Updates

Children and teacher surrounding a tablet smiling

Is your program ready to re-open?
Child care providers across the state have always prioritized the health and safety of the children in their care. With the spread of COVID-19, new health and safety protocols are necessary to ensure children, families, and staff members are as safe as possible. The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) has developed a guidance document to provide tools to help you make the best decisions possible to limit the spread of COVID-19 and to create safe spaces for children and staff members.

If you have questions about how and when to reopen, your licensing consultant is available to help you consider your options. LARA will be sharing relevant updates on the licensing listserv and you can also visit https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus for up-to-date information about whether child care providers can open and which families you can serve.

What is happening with Great Start to Quality?

Are you curious about how the Great Start to Quality rating process is continuing during this unprecedented time? We know programs and families rely on the benefits that come from having a star rating, and we are here to help you get or maintain your star rating. We will be working with programs to address individual circumstances and make reasonable accommodations when possible to help programs maintain their high quality ratings as they move through the process.

To learn more or get started with the rating process today, contact your local Great Start to Quality Resource Center at 877-614-7328 or email us at [email protected].

Rating Extensions:
Programs with ratings that expire(d) between March 16-June 25, prior to E.O. 2020-04 (before the state of emergency), will have their ratings extended by 13 weeks. Rating extensions will be reflected by the beginning of June.

Don't wait too long to start, be sure to work with your local Great Start to Quality Resource Center to ensure your program has completed all of the necessary steps in MiRegistry, before you get started with the rating process. To prepare for the process, learn more about the MiRegistry-Great Start to Quality connection and how to complete your organization information.

Application and Validation:
Great Start to Quality is processing all applications and validations within normal, and in some cases faster, timelines. The GSQ Team is still reviewing and approving Applications each day, and you can expect to receive a response within four business days. The GSQ Validation Team is continuing to work with programs to complete validations over the phone and processing most validations in under 30 days. Get started by learning how to apply for a rating, add your classroom information, and complete and submit your Self-Assessment Survey.

Assessment:
While on-site assessments are currently paused, it is the GSQ Assessment Team's goal to help programs maintain their rating and complete the rating process as soon as it is safe to do so. Learn about the on-site assessment process now, so you are prepared when we are able to complete the observation.
Have you applied for the Child Care Relief Fund grants?
If you haven't already, make sure you apply for a Child Care Relief Fund grant. Every Michigan child care provider is eligible for funding and the application only takes 10 minutes to complete.

What is it?
The Child Care Relief Fund is a grant program that helps child care providers cover costs during the COVID-19 state of emergency. The goal of the program is to help you stay in business and make child care more affordable for Michigan families. These grants are non-competitive and you can apply for funding right now. Funding is available now for the month of April, and applications will become available for May and June.

Where can I apply?
Apply now by visiting www.michigan.gov/childcare on your computer or mobile device. See the Michigan Department of Education's FAQ document for more details.
