As well as staying abreast of the issues of the day and doing what the can to solve them. Such as participating in voter registration, petition drives, letter writing campaigns, calling on congress, volunteering for a cause or a canditate for public office. Any of these are noble causes worthy of our time and effort but Obama 2012 will most likely be a major focus. The others will be partnering with other active groups on campus and fighting for causes such as equal rights, the environment, and poverty. Meetings will be TBA and will called as needed. Please send the group a message for more info.

Industrial agriculture is turning our farmland into dead soil at an alarming rate. The Need To GROW is a film about SOLUTIONS for healing our broken food system.

🎬Watch the film right now for free at https://grow.foodrevolution.org/

The UN estimates we have fewer than 60 years of farmable soil left on Earth.

And many people are concerned that governments and “Big Ag” want to control what we eat.

It’s as if our human right to eat safe food is under attack by industrial agriculture, pesticide and GMO manufacturers.

“Agriculture is the most destructive human activity on the planet.”
- Rosario Dawson (From “The Need To GROW” movie)

“Industrial agriculture is first and foremost a war against the earth because it’s a war against all species. Since you’re bringing war chemicals into the production of food and all they’re doing is killing.”
- Vandana Shiva, PhD

Something must be done.

Which is why we spent the last 5 years making our film “The Need To GROW.”

The Need to GROW is a story about real-world SOLUTIONS.

🎬Watch the movie for free at https://grow.foodrevolution.org/

Executive produced and Narrated by Rosario Dawson (Marvel’s The Defenders, The Lego Batman Movie)...

The Need To GROW follows three renegade leaders as they fight to heal our broken food system and protect new technology that holds the key to feeding the planet and reversing the damage caused by industrial agriculture.

✳️ An urban farmer struggles to keep his land after he pioneers a way to grow organic, nutrient-dense produce at warp speed ANYWHERE

(Imagine paved parking lots sprouting acres of huge, healthy, micronutrient-rich, organic veggies)

✳️ An 8-year-old girl scout challenges the ethics of a beloved organization in her quest to raise awareness and make healthy food available to everyone.

✳️ And a visionary inventor builds a machine that takes waste and turns it into a natural substance that can reclaim and regenerate dead soil. (Doing in days what takes nature 400 years!)

It’s easy to feel like the problems we face on the planet are too big.

That there’s nothing we can do.

That it’s too late.

It’s not. We just need hope.

WE NEED TO KNOW THERE IS A CHOICE THAT *CAN* WORK.

This film provides that hope.

You’ll see real solutions to some of our biggest environmental challenges.

The movie is engaging, informative and hopeful without being preachy.

It will make you laugh, make you cry, give you chills, and inspire you to participate in the restoration of the Earth.

And for a limited time, you can watch the entire film absolutely free:

https://grow.foodrevolution.org/

If you’re interested in a healthy future for our planet, please watch the film right away.

The disruptive new technology featured in the film puts the power to grow unlimited healthy food in the hands of the people.

And these breakthroughs threaten the status quo of the energy, agriculture and fertilizer multinationals who want to control what we eat.

Many deep-rooted corporate interest groups desperately want this technology to quietly disappear.

We can’t let that happen. We WON’T let it happen.

The more people aware of these solutions, the better our chances of passing on a thriving, healthy planet to our children and grandchildren.

Watch the movie, learn about the solutions, spread the word and join us in making a difference:

Trump's 2020 position is improving

This is why we need Sanders. He is our best chance. Trumps numbers have not gone down. Sanders are going up. And all the other candidates are flat.

A new Gallup national poll finds that President Donald Trump has a 49% approval rating and a disapproval rating of 48%. That's very similar to its previous poll and marks the first time since January 2017 that Trump has a net (approval - disapproval) positive approval rating in the Gallup poll.

Welcome to Michigan, President Trump. About that economy you promised …

"Three years later, Calhoun County has not experienced the big gains Trump promised in 2016. Jobs have decreased, as have wages when adjusted for inflation. Manufacturing — which comprises more than 20 percent of all jobs in the county — continues to be particularly hard hit. Those jobs are down 6 percent and total manufacturing wages declined nearly 18 percent.
That trend is writ large in the other 11 counties that Trump pried away from Democrats and in the Midwest as a whole, where data indicate that counties that favored Trump are being left behind."

Jobs and wages are down in most of the 12 counties that switched support from Barack Obama to Donald Trump in 2016, but voters say they have confidence in the president and the economy.

A Trump administration rule will make obtaining birth control harder for many women

Elections have consequences. That is what we keep hearing. I hope women realize how real these are. All women. Not just the poor. Not just the dems. All women. No woman should have a good reason to still support Trump. He has done everything he can to turn the clock back. And no minority should have a good reason to still support Trump. He has done everything he could to divide us rather than unite us. And no lgbtq person should support Trump since he has done everything he could to stand against them. And no one who is not well off should support Trump since he put's corperate interests and his own before the country's interests. And no one who loves this country and all that we stand for should support Trump as he moves us to a more and more extremely isolationalist. Meanwhile our country is retreating from international commitments on climate change and refugees. We are fast losing our leadership role on key issues and ceding control to foreign medeling. This needs to end. This can't go on.

America Is Drowning in Milk Nobody Wants

We need to change the way the subsidies work over the long term. Canada along with other countries pay the farmer directly. It is not based on a specific crop or product. I think the U.S. should try and phase in a similar system over time to offer more flexibily with our changing food system.

Dairy farmers are under siege thanks to changing consumer tastes.

History is about to repeat itself after another round of tax cuts just got snuck through and gas prices are steadily rising along with inflation. Once the Fed raises rates and the Trade war amps up in January, anyone who is not already working Full time will have a tougher time just like during the recession finding and keeping a full time job. The minimum wage may be on the rise but many incentives at most jobs have been drastically cut since the last recession and now that the economy has recovered people would normally get a raise but most have not seen one.

2.) When Conservatives had the choice between tax breaks for the super rich and body armor for American troops dying in Iraq, they chose tax breaks.

3.) When Conservatives had a choice between tax breaks for the super rich or funding for the National Institute of Health, which works on cures for cancer, heart disease and other serious illnesses, they cut funding for Health.

4.) Every time working people have asked for a raise in the minimum wage, Conservatives have opposed it, saying that wealthy businesses can't afford it—even as they gave giant bonuses to Wall Street CEOs.

5.) When scientists found research on stem cells could help people with Alzheimer's or quadriplegia overcome their illness, Conservatives killed it, saying God was against it.

6.) When Congress proposed a national holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Conservatives opposed it, calling the assassinated civil rights leader a Communist on the floor of the United States Senate.

7.) When World War II veterans who lost limbs defending our nation, asked for wheelchair accessible sidewalks and buildings, Conservatives opposed it, saying it was too expensive.

8.) When Franklin Roosevelt tried to create a safety net for senior citizens, Conservatives opposed it, saying America can't afford it, and they have been trying to dismantle Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid ever since.

9.) When Bill Clinton proposed a law that would allow new mothers to take three months of unpaid leave from a job without fear of getting fired for having a baby, Conservatives opposed it, saying it would be too costly for business.

10.) When Conservatives found half the people going bankrupt every year were doing so after a catastrophic illness that wiped out their life savings, Conservatives changed the law to make it impossible for them to file for bankruptcy, so that credit card companies could expand their profits.

11.) When oil company profits skyrocketed beyond all previous heights, and the price of gas soared from $1.50 to over $3, Conservatives passed a multibillion dollar taxpayer giveaway for oil companies to keep up the good work.

Opinion | The New Socialists

I do not consider myself a socialist. I consider myself a Democrat. And as for the type of economic system we should have I believe that Bernie and the Democratic Socialists have a point that Capitalism needs to change. But bear in mind we will still have capitalism. Where I disagree is that Bernies going to get the votes in congress to accomplish his agenda even if hes elected. Trump has it easy. He has all three branches of government, and unlimited war chest and foreign backing. Bernie has the youth vote, some money, some support, some votes in congress, and his plans sound great but they don't get as much bipartisan support as Trumps did. Which is why I am worried.

Why the pitch from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders resonates in 2018.

What is a Precinct Delegate and Why Do They Matter? – From Lisa DiRado, Candidate for MDP Chair Precinct delegates are elected officials of the Democratic Party who represent the neighborhoods where they live. Precinct delegates are often important leaders and organizers in our local clubs, caucuses, districts, county parties and the MDP. They are the grassroots organizers who build and maintain relationships with their voters, ensure residents are aware of the issues affecting them, and rally them to turn out during election season. Ultimately, it is the active precinct delegate who wins elections for the Democratic Party. But in order to succeed in their jobs, they need resources and support from our party. As MDP chair, I will help our precinct delegates do their job. This includes training them, empowering them as local organizers, and providing infrastructure such as VAN lists or access, messaging and literature. I know how to tackle this challenge because I’ve been a precinct delegate since 2010 and I canvass my precinct every election cycle. But that’s not enough. We need to engage with our precincts in the off year and not just for a few months before elections. And we need tools and guidance from the MDP to keep our delegates prepared for and excited about the work they do. In Northville and the 11th Congressional District we have actively recruited precinct delegates. Every cycle, Susan Nichols and others travel throughout the district to notarize the required forms so that precinct delegates appear on the ballot. Last year, I organized precinct delegate training throughout Western Wayne County, and activists including Michael Siegrist, Kate Shishkovsky, Sommer Foster, Kelly Breen and Trevor Tutro-Anderson trained 200 people. It was a group effort and it shows how much we can accomplish when we collaborate! We’ve also supported our Northville and 11th District delegates by providing comprehensive information. I wrote and distributed the Democratic Precinct Delegate Handbook that provides a complete picture of a precinct delegate’s role and strategies for working effectively within a precinct. This is what I was able to accomplish locally with limited resources, and at the local level, we devoted resources to organizing our precinct delegates and succeeded in flipping several seats in the midterms. Think of what we could achieve if we took these grassroots strategies to the state level! You may hear campaigns or party organizers say that precinct delegates won’t work for them. We can’t just call on them a few months before the election. We can’t expect precinct delegates to work without understanding their job. We must let them know they are an important part of the Democratic Party, we must train them, we must value them, and we must give them a seat at the table all year long. I love the Democratic Party, but I love it enough to know we must do more to win in 2019 and 2020. And helping our precinct delegates do their job is a priority for me. I’m asking for you to vote for me for MDP Chair because United we are Democrats – and united we can win. - Lisa Dirado for MDP Chair
Lisa DiRado is running for MDP Chair she is all about Grass Roots Why Values Matter Ask any Democrat what we need to win and our “message” (or lack of a message) will probably top the list. To win in 2020, we need a values-based message and we need to blast that message throughout every crevice of our party and beyond. The question is, who are we as Democrats? What are our values? First, Democrats have empathy. Everyone cares for their own people, but Democrats care for other people, including people who may be different from them and people they have never met. Second, Democrats believe in responsibility for themselves but also responsibility for each other. Finally, Democrats believe in the common good. We believe that good government has the power to make people's lives better. I’m sure you're wondering how to fit that on a campaign button or a bumper sticker, but I’m not talking about a slogan. I’m talking about overarching, universal principles that explain what we believe and are the foundation of our party’s policies. George Lakoff, cognitive linguist and author of Don't Think of an Elephant has written extensively about values messaging. In 2017, as a leader in Indivisible District 11 I brought Lakoff’s value message framing training to Dr. Kumar’s house. We brought in George Green and Julie Ethan of Connections Lab of Minnesota. People came from out of state, Dem clubs, Indivisible, Fems for Dems, and more and we trained over 100 people. This values framing continued through an active Facebook progressive framing group, Northville Dems digital campaign and rebranding, and 500 value signs that were spread throughout Western Wayne and Oakland Counties leading up to the 2018 mid-term election. How does values based messaging work, and more importantly, how does it differ from the policies that our elected officials advocate for? Our values are the foundations of the policies that our party puts forth. However, policy can divide us when we don’t all envision the same solutions to our problems, but values are unifying. You can choose any topic or policy and talk about empathy, responsibility for ourselves and each other, and government for the common good. That is our message. That is our strength. Here are a few examples: Democrats believe that taking care of one another means that we view healthcare as a right, not a privilege. We believe we should take responsibility for others, and we know the government can help to increase access to healthcare and make it better, more efficient, and more affordable. When you are talking about a healthcare guarantee we should emphasize the importance of caring and good government. Democrats know that water is life and that the government can help preserve our Great Lakes for future generations. When talking about water, we should discuss providing clean, safe water for ourselves and each other, and protecting one another from the dangers of pollution in our waterways. While our opponents always mention the financial cost of taking care of one another, Democrats understand that the bigger cost is in compromising the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness of our people. We care about all people, are responsible for each other and know that the government plays an important role in protecting our resources, our workers, and our society as a whole. Values-based messaging helps us connect on a deeper level with our voters. I’ve seen it in action, and the results were incredible. As President of the Northville Dems, I developed our message to be values-based and I re-branded our club based on our values. We trained on it, created a new website, ran a digital campaign and distributed values-based lawn signs. We flipped five seats from red to blue in a notoriously tough district, and I can’t stop smiling. As Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, my vision is to create a broad, values-based message, provide comprehensive training in that message, and execute an overarching media campaign based on that message. I know with the right preparation, we can succeed again on a bigger scale this time. I love the Democratic Party, but I love it enough to know we can do better. I am asking you to believe we can do more if we have a bold, unifying, and values-based message. I’m asking for you to support my candidacy for MDP Chair because United we are Democrats – and united we can win.
