We look forward to working with the City of Holden to ensure that this issue gets resolved either through grants or through our state budget process next session.

In this week's edition of “Under Two from the District,” we take a look at the newly renovated Humphrey’s building at the University of Central Missouri (UCM).

UCM is a pillar of our community, and I was proud to work with my colleagues to secure the restoration of nearly $9 million in last session's House Bill (HB) 2003, so they can continue educating the next generation of community leaders.

It is an honor and privilege to represent our community, and I would encourage all of you to visit the University of Central Missouri and all that our district has to offer.

Today, I was honored to return to where my career began, Warrensburg High School, to announce that I will be working on creating a “Teachers Bill of Rights” to help protect our teachers.

Our teachers are some of our hardest-working and most underappreciated professionals, despite having one of the most important jobs in our state. I want to ensure that the State of Missouri is doing what it can to protect them.

I am humbled and honored to be recognized by the Missouri Nurses Association as a legislative champion.

Our nurses are always there in our times of need. The least we can do is be there for them. I was proud to sponsor legislation to allow and require our hospitals to place signage in their emergency and labor and delivery departments warning of the potential consequences of assaulting our healthcare workers. This legislation was signed into law, and I sincerely hope that it helps better protect our nurses.

I was also honored to carry legislation to amend the definition of assault in the fourth degree to include causing physical pain to a special victim, which would include our nurses. Unfortunately, this legislation did not make it to the Governor’s desk.

I look forward to continuing to work with our nurses as we continue our efforts to make Missouri the safest state in the nation for our nurses.

I was honored to be asked to return to the Capitol today to participate in the Missouri Youth Leadership Academy’s mock committee hearings.

Happy Father’s Day to all the great fathers, grandfathers, and stepfathers across our district and state. Your hard work and dedication to raising our kids to be principled, hardworking adults continue to keep our community and state strong.

One of the greatest responsibilities and joys of my life will always be raising my two daughters, Morgan and Allie.

Today, we take a moment to recognize all of our fathers for their tireless efforts in raising the next generation of our state’s leaders.

I am saddened to learn of the passing of Johnson County Western District Commissioner Charlie Kavanaugh.

Over the last ten years, Charlie has been a dedicated public servant who faithfully and selflessly served the people of western Johnson County, ensuring they had a voice in their county government. Our community is better today because of Charlie’s commitment to service.

Please join me in sending his family and friends our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

It is with profound sadness that the Johnson County Commission announces the passing of Western Commissioner Charlie Kavanaugh.

Charlie was a dedicated public servant to the residents of Johnson County, serving as Western Commissioner since January 1, 2017. During his time as commissioner, Charlie was an integral part of improving the county’s financial and economic standing, paying off the lease purchase of the Johnson County Justice Center earlier than expected, reducing the county property tax levies and improving the safety of the county roads and bridges while maintaining a balanced budget.

On behalf of the elected officials and employees of Johnson County, Commissioners Matthews and Sproat would like to extend heartfelt condolences to Charlie’s wife, Sharon Kavanaugh and his extended family and friends. Charlie will be greatly missed.
