🚨 A SMALL TEST. A BIG DIFFERENCE. 🚨

When was the last time you tested your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms?

The Kosciusko County CERT Team encourages you to take a few minutes to check these important safety devices!

✅ Test both types of alarms monthly using the test button.
✅ Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level—including the basement.
✅ Install CO alarms outside each separate sleeping area and on every level.
✅ Replace smoke alarms at 10 years old. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement instructions for CO alarms.
✅ Make sure everyone in your household recognizes the alarm sounds and knows how to get outside.

🚨 If a smoke or CO emergency alarm sounds, get outside, call 911, and stay outside until responders say it’s safe.

Make checking your alarms part of your monthly routine. A few minutes today could help protect your family tomorrow. 💚

If a disaster damaged your home, could you remember everything you owned?

The Kosciusko County CERT Team encourages you to create a home inventory—starting with just one room today!

✅ Take photos or a video of your belongings.
✅ Record makes, models, and serial numbers for electronics and appliances.
✅ Keep receipts for important purchases with your inventory.
✅ Save a secure backup you can access if your home or phone is damaged.

Having a record of your belongings can make the insurance claim process easier after a disaster.

💚 Preparedness includes planning for recovery, too. A few minutes today can help you later!

🏡🚑 CAN EMERGENCY RESPONDERS FIND YOUR HOME?

Your address numbers may be a small detail, but they help emergency crews find you when you need them!

Kosciusko County CERT Team encourages everyone to do a quick address check:

✅ Can you read your house numbers from the road?
✅ Are they visible after dark?
✅ Are branches, decorations, or other objects blocking them?
✅ Are any numbers missing or faded?
✅ If your home sits back from the road, is your address clearly marked at the driveway?

💡 Large, contrasting numbers and reflective or illuminated signs can make your address easier to spot.

Tonight’s preparedness challenge: Check your address from a safe spot near the road after sunset. A small improvement today could help responders tomorrow! 💚

🏡 Preparedness starts at home!

Our Kosciusko County CERT participants completed Session 1 of Basic Training on Saturday, and we’re looking forward to Session 2 this coming Saturday, October 17! 💚

You can take steps to be better prepared right at home. Pick one thing to do today:

🔦 Check your flashlights and batteries.
🎒 Review your emergency supplies.
📱 Make sure everyone in your household has important contact numbers.
🐾 Include your pets in your emergency plan.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Talk about where your family will meet if you become separated.

Every small step helps build a more prepared household—and a stronger community.

🦺 Teamwork in action at Kosciusko County CERT Basic Training today!

Participants split into two teams for a challenge: build a 5-foot tower in just 5 minutes using only 20 sheets of construction paper, tape, and scissors! 🏗️⏱️✂️

The activity put communication and teamwork to the test—sharing ideas, listening, making a plan, and working together with the clock ticking!

A fun way to practice skills that help us serve our community when it needs us most. 💚
