Bayfield County homeowners and renters affected by the April 13–23, 2026 severe storms and flooding may qualify for federal disaster assistance. If your home or personal property was damaged, make sure to apply before the August 31, 2026 deadline.

FEMA representatives will be on-site at the Bayfield County Emergency Operations Center, 117 E 6th Street, this Friday and Saturday (August 14–15) from 9 AM to 4 PM to help residents sign up for assistance.

Assistance may include:
• Home repairs
• Personal property losses
• Disaster‑related expenses
• Low‑interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters, businesses, and some nonprofits

Bayfield County is still under a Hazardous Air Quality Alert due to extremely high smoke levels. The Wisconsin DNR expects air quality to improve by tomorrow, as shifting weather patterns push smoke out of the region.

🛑 What you can do today:

Avoid unnecessary outdoor physical activity.
Keep indoor spaces well-ventilated—but be mindful of outdoor air intake.
Pay extra attention to vulnerable individuals: those with heart or lung conditions, older adults, children, and teens.

Stay connected and follow updates via local news and the Wisconsin Air Quality Forecast.

✅ Outlook for tomorrow: Air quality is expected to ease significantly, offering relief from today’s hazardous conditions

Department meteorologists use monitoring data and weather forecast models to predict Wisconsin's future ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air quality using the Air Quality Index (AQI) [exit DNR]. This forecast is updated frequently, and when warranted, an Air Quality Advisory is issued....

Bayfield County is currently under an Air Quality Alert. Air quality levels are very unhealthy.

People with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and teens should avoid outdoor physical activity.

Everyone else should avoid strenuous activity outside, keep outdoor time short, and consider moving activities indoors or rescheduling them.

Bayfield and Ashland Counties are under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until at least 7pm tonight.

According to US National Weather Service Duluth Minnesota:

Several rounds of thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening, with numerous severe storms possible. All severe weather hazards are possible, including large to very large hail, damaging
wind gusts, tornadoes, and locally heavy rainfall.

The peak severe weather threat will be through around 7 PM with some lingering storms through around midnight.
