USAS affiliates run both local and nationally-coordinated campaigns for economic justice in partnership with worker and community organizations. Since 1997, USAS has won precedent-setting campaigns, educated students about the growing dominance of corporations in the globalized economy, as well as the intersectionality of identity and social justice issues with the labor movement, and has trained tens of thousands of young activists to become skilled organizers, researchers, and campaigners in labor and social justice organizations. USAS seeks to hold accountable multinational companies that exploit the people who work on university campuses, in our communities, and in the overseas factories where collegiate apparel is produced. Students have unique leverage over the colleges and universities that are often the largest employers, the largest landlords, and large institutional investors in our communities and regions. Students also have leverage over the companies that value universities as clients. Over the past 16 years, USAS has won significant campaigns for organizing rights, fair contracts and living wage policies on campuses and in communities all across the US, using student power to support workers struggling to transform minimum wage jobs into living-wage, union jobs, and ensure universities support ethical contractors that set - not undercut - good employment standards in local economies. USAS is committed to building the next generation of progressive leaders who will be at the forefront of labor and social justice struggles. In carrying out this mission, we actively practice the principles of collective liberation to prioritize the development and mentorship of students of color, working class students mixed-race students, women, transgender, q***r and differently-abled students. We strive to build deep relationships with other grassroots movements because we believe the labor movement is part of broader struggle for global justice.

TAKE ACTION TODAY and join United Students Against Sweatshops - USAS Local 94 at UCSD in an urgent call-in to UCSD Health’s CEO Patty Maysent to demand the racist layoffs of Tammy and Ashley be rescinded. A few months ago, the only 2 Black care management workers in their layoff unit got unjustly laid off by UCSD Health in the middle of the pandemic. Prior to her termination, Tammy filed a discrimination grievance regarding racism she faced from her supervisor, and her layoff is clearly retaliatory. Meanwhile, Ashley is facing homelessness amid the height of the pandemic as a result of this racist layoff. It’s time we come together as the student labor movement and say that we won't tolerate racism on our campus or in our communities! Let’s all make sure that every call that UCSD Health's CEO Patty Maysent gets today is one of us demanding that Tammy and Ashley be reinstated.

@wesuslac USAS local 193’s essential residential student worker campaign for hazard pay covered by @wesleyan.argus —

“Additionally, many students did not move out on time and were in their apartments and dorms without masks on when ResLife student workers arrived to close residences.

“It really put us in an awkward situation as well, because like a lot of students hadn’t moved out at the time that they’re supposed to, so we were going through people’s apartments and there were people in there not wearing masks,” a Reslife student worker said. “They sent out the email that, if you can go home, it’s back to phase one, and you can’t go into anyone else’s dorm or residence space. Well, we were going into other people’s dorms or residential spaces having to lock windows, having to adjust the heat and touch things like lights and blinds.” “

“Despite the fear, the petition has empowered students working for ResLife to become more vocal in favor of better working conditions.
“Every worker at Wesleyan has the right to feel safe in their job,” one ResLife student worker said.” ✊✊✊

“Being a leader in a student-led organization that fights for workers’ rights is inspiring! USAS has brought me purpose to know that I can help change the lives of others for the better” - Makayla, USAS Local 14 at Gonzaga University

This year has demonstrated the importance of USAS organizing more than ever before. With our universities continuing to put profit over student and worker lives, USASers are leading the fight against unsafe campus reopening policies and worker layoffs amidst the pandemic. In order to continue training the next generation of labor movement leaders, we need your support!

That’s why this #GivingTuesday, we are calling on our USAS alumni and allies to support the future leaders of the labor movement. USAS has a 23 year history of winning historic campaigns alongside workers on our campuses, in our communities, and garment workers producing university apparel overseas. We have also trained countless organizers and movement leaders, with 1 in 4 USASers going on to work in the labor movement after graduation. None of this would be possible without the generous contributions of our alumni and ally sustainers, who provide us with the means to keep USAS running. Donate now at tinyurl.com/fundusas.

“USAS has changed my life and given me hope for my future by giving me the tools and resources to become a student organizer in the labor movement” - Camila, USAS Local 559 at Fresno City College

"The events of this year have increasingly brought to light what many of us have always known to be true: this system is failing everyone, and working people are ready to fight back. We are witnessing the self-destruction of capitalism right before our eyes, so how can we use the momentum in the streets right now to build our power as student organizers, as workers, and as the future leaders of the labor movement? It’s time to dream big!"

Today we have an urgent call for solidarity from a worker at the UC San Diego Health Center who is facing a retaliatory layoff after speaking out about racism in the workplace. Tammy Totten, a Teamsters Local 2010 member, is one of only two Black workers in the UCSD Health Managed Care unit. After filing a discrimination complaint against her supervisor, Tammy faced harassment and threats in the workplace until she was issued a layoff notice. Tammy is now calling on USASers to support her in demanding that UCSD Health Center CEO Patty Maysent rescind her layoff notice. Click https://ctt.ac/3xQW1 to tweet in solidarity with Tammy and let UCSD know that racism will not be tolerated in the workplace!

Join USAS, Winnipeg Youth United, and Workers United Canada Council, an SEIU affiliate next Saturday, October 17th 3-4:30pm ET for the Canada Goose Student Solidarity Summit where we will plan our campaign to win justice for Canada Goose garment workers! Register: bit.ly/cgtruth

Canada Goose workers from Winnipeg, Manitoba have come forward with stories of injustice happening in their workplace. They are demanding the right to form a union in an atmosphere free of company interference and free of fear. Workers are facing a number of issues including safety during the pandemic, bullying from management, poor treatment of immigrant workers, no job security, and sweatshop wages.

USAS is joining with Winnipeg Youth United, to stand in solidarity with workers and their fight for justice, and together we are ready to expose the company’s unethical practices and reveal the truth behind their famous label!

We are inviting all youth leaders and activists interested in making the right to organize a union a fundamental human right, to an online zoom planning meeting on Saturday October 17th, 2020 @ 3:00pm – 4:30pm ET. We will hear from workers first hand, and collectively develop a plan for the rest of this year and 2021 to show our support and help the 1000 workers in Winnipeg win justice.

Also call Ruth's office at ‭(518) 257-8723‬ and tell her that USAS says a contract for Albany nurses is long overdue! ☎️

🗣 Jen Bejo, a nurse at Albany Medical Center, has reached out with the following message:

“Nurses at Albany Medical Center are fighting for the health and safety of our coworkers, communities and patients. As patient advocates, we've risen to the challenge during a global pandemic, but management refuses to bargain in good faith. Three years after we voted overwhelmingly to organize a union, management continues to stall negotiations. With a second wave of COVID looming, we can wait no longer. We need a contract now so that we can retain nurses, fight for safe staffing and have a real voice on the job. By a supermajority, nurses have authorized a strike. We are calling on the support of USAS to help us pressure management to do the right thing and settle our contract. The health and safety of our communities depends on it! Will you tweet and call Albany Medical Center board member Ruth Mahoney and tell her to back the frontline workers and settle the contract?” - RN Jen Bejo ✊

CW: anti-Black racism , racist violence towards BIPOC adults and children, family separation/ trauma , state violence Ya'll this is Anna Barcy, an alum of Rutgers United Students Against Sweatshops Local 109 One of our dearest friends and organisers, Kaila Boulware has experienced a anti-Black racist arrest in North Carolina. Her husband, Ray was beaten and her son was taken away. Ray and Kaila have seen been released but they are still without their baby boy, Truth It has almost been 20 days since they have seen their baby. Tomorrow at 9 AM EST Kaila and Ray will be going to a hearing to ensure that Truth returns to that. We NEED our community to stand with them. Please share, please call at the posts below. Nike must be responsible for the fate of Dayat and his friends (30 people). Who are Dayat and his friends ?! Dayat and his friends are workers at Dream Sentosa Indonesia (Kanaan Group Korea) who worked for 15 years producing accessories for Nike. Why does Nike have to be responsible ?! Nike must be responsible for the continuation of the work and fulfillment of the rights of Dayat and his friends. Because the company (Dream Sentosa Indonesia-Kanaan Group Korea) is a factory that produces goods for Nike, then closes its business without fulfilling obligations to its workers. The Dream Sentosa Indonesia company even tried to add to the suffering of Dayat and his friends, by filing lawsuits with them to the Karawang District Court and demanding compensation of around 750,000,000 (IDR). And for this, Nike as an employer committed negligence. Although later, the Karawang District Court rejected the lawsuit. Nike is only looking for cheap labor (enslaving) Indonesian workers. In this case, it is very clear how Nike exploits Indonesian labor using the wage system in Indonesia, where the wages of Indonesian workers are determined by region (minimum wage), the value is not the same between one region and another. It is known that every Nike product is sold at the same price and is quite expensive in various countries, with the US Dollar exchange rate.
I wrote a piece detailing relevant instances of unethical conduct by ASU’s (and many other universities) food service provider, Aramark, following a strike at NYU. I think it’s information that students should know.
United Students Against Sweatshops has been fighting for a living wage for Rutgers employees and because of a peaceful protest, 11 student activists are facing legal charges and fines. Rutgers University is attempting to silence student activists by threatening us with strong legal action while claiming to be Revolutionary. Please help us pay the fines of working class student activists so that we can continue to fight for just working conditions domestically and internationally.
This is a great example of when sustained and global campaigning works. Great victory
This is a welcome victory that proves sustained and global campaigning works
