In recognition of Black History Month, the Educational Opportunity Center shines its spotlight on Viola Davis, a world-renowned, Grammy-nominated actress and producer, recipient of a Tony Award, an Emmy Award, and an Academy Award, and an alumnus of TRIO Programs.

Born in South Carolina but raised in West Warwick and Central Falls, Rhode Island, Viola Davis grew up in a family that constantly emphasized the value of higher education. The second youngest of six children, Viola was introduced to TRIO programs by her eldest sister, Dianne, while she was enrolled at the Young People’s School of Performing Arts. Along with her siblings, Davis credits TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Student Support Services for widening their possibilities and transforming their lives.

“Upward Bound and the preparatory program made me a citizen of the world. It gave me perspective and it made me feel like my situation and my environment didn’t define me.”

As one of the federally funded TRIO programs, the EOC is here to help you complete your educational journey and achieve your dreams! Give us a call at 202-741-4730 to receive free educational counseling, career counseling, and assistance with your FAFSA and college applications.
