Earlier this month, ODNI held its first virtual Adopt-a-High School event.

Chris Waugh, a National Counterterrorism Center officer, spoke to more than 50 students and faculty from the Columbia Heights Education Campus about ODNI’s mission and the importance of public service.

ODNI’s Adopt-a-High School partnership program supports educational efforts for local high school students, allowing students to learn about the Intelligence Community mission, internships, and career opportunities.

“We hope by exposing young minds to what we do and why, we are reaching and encouraging the next generation of students to lead the IC’s initiatives,” said Daphne Martinez, ODNI Chief of Recruitment Group.

At 20 years old, Taylor supports ODNI’s Office of Cyber Executive as a staffing coordinator while on a Joint Duty Assignment from the NSA - National Security Agency.

Taylor started her career in the Intelligence Community while attending high school on an NSA work-study internship, she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to continue working in the IC while she attends college.

“I knew the internship would give me great experience, but I never knew it would lead me here.”

Continuous engagement with Combatant Commanders strengthens IC/Department of Defense collaboration as the United States monitors, deters, and when required defeats threats to our nation.

This Public Service Recognition Week meet Sunita Patel, chief counsel for ODNI’s Office of General Counsel. Sunita has 14 years of public service.

Sunita started her career as an attorney for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) National Security Law Section, later serving the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, and now at ODNI.

“Joining public service will allow you to actively live the Constitutional principle of a government of the people, by the people, and for the people,” she said. “Your heart will feel fulfilled because through your service you impact the nation’s direction on things that impact people’s lives.”
