The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington D.C. is pleased to witness the fruition of yet another successful academic collaboration initiated by the Embassy which has paved the way for a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Sri Palee Campus of the University of Colombo and the Randolph College, Virginia, USA.

The discussions on a possible academic collaboration was initiated subsequent to the visit of Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States Mahinda Samarasinghe to the Randolph College in February 2025. A group of academia and students of the Randolph College undertook a visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025 as a familiarization tour and to explore avenues for establishing academic collaborations with the Sri Lankan universities. Given the academic interest was mainly focused on Arts stream, the Embassy connected the visiting team with the Vice Chancellor of the Peradeniya University and the Rector of the Sri Palee Campus.
The Sri Palee Campus has informed the Embassy of its recent signing of the MoU with the Randolph College. Recognizing the support extended by the Embassy, Rector of the Sri Palee Campus Prof.Prathiba Mahanamahewa has mentioned that โ€œI would like to express my sincere gratitude to Hon.Mahinda Samarasinghe, Ambassador, for taking the initial steps to facilitate this collaboration from day oneโ€.
Randolf College, Virgina, established in 1891 as Randolph-Macon Woman's College and became co-educational in 2007, is currently a leading performing arts higher education institution in the United States.

Strong Bilateral relations between the US and Sri Lanka, timely action and relevant directives on the part of HE the President, hard work and focused negotiations by the Sri Lankan delegation comprising Finance Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma (leader of the delegation), Governor of the Central Bank Nandalal Weerasinghe, Trade Secretary Vimalenthirarajah, Chief Economic Advisor and BOI Chairman Duminda Hulangamuwa and Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States Mahinda Samarasinghe and the day to day coordination, intelligence gathering, advice and building of goodwill by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC resulted in this favorable outcome for Sri Lanka. As I complete my relatively long tenure as Ambassador in a few daysโ€™ time I would like to leave behind a word of caution that we should not be complacent moving forward, as there are more challenges to overcome in order to sustain this positive outcome.

As for me, I am ready to offer my assistance to the President and his Government if requested. There is absolutely nothing that we as Sri Lankans cannot achieve if we work as a team setting aside political agendas in the best interest of our beloved motherland!โ€

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the United States Mahinda Samarasinghe presented the first copy of the Coffee Table Book published by the Embassy to mark the 250th anniversary of Independence of the United States to Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs of the Department of State Allison Ho**er at the Department of State on 15 July 2026.

The Coffee Table Book is an initiative by the Embassy to underscore the enduring friendship and longstanding partnership between Sri Lanka and the United States.

The Book reflects upon the key milestones in relations between Sri Lanka and the United States, assistance provided by the United States to Sri Lanka over the years and also recognizes prominent individuals of both countries who have contributed to the socio-economic development of the two nations. Through compelling photography and insightful narratives, the publication offers readers a comprehensive perspective on longstanding relations between Sri Lanka and the United States.

During the meeting, the Ambassador briefed the Under Secretary on the objectives of the publication and reaffirmed Sri Lanka's commitment to further consolidate bilateral relations. He also informed her that he would work towards translating this publication into Sinhala and Tamil languages, making it more accessible to the general public in Sri Lanka.

The Under Secretary welcomed the publication and appreciated the Embassy's initiative in documenting the historical information on the evolving US-Sri Lanka relations, at a special juncture when the US is celebrating its 250th anniversary of independence.

The publication of this Coffee Table Book was made possible as a result of a generous sponsorship made by the Joint Apparel Association Forum Sri Lanka (JAAF), underscoring the Embassy's ongoing efforts to foster stronger bilateral ties and expand public and trade diplomacy initiatives.
