Dupont Circle

Much more than just a traffic circle. On February 25, 1882, Congress renamed the circle to "Dupont Circle", and authorized a memorial statue of Samuel Francis Du Pont, in recognition of his service as a rear admiral during the Civil War.

The statue, sculpted by Launt Thompson, was erected in 1884, and the circle was landscaped with exotic flowers and ornamental trees. In 1921, the current double-tiered white marble fountain replaced the statue. Daniel Chester French and architect Henry Bacon, the co-creators of the Lincoln Memorial, designed the fountain, which features carvings of three classical figures symbolizing the sea, the stars and the wind on the fountain's shaft.

Going Out Gurus - New Destinations for Wine, Beer and Margaritas

Pizzeria Paradiso has finally set an opening date for its new, larger restaurant at 2003 P St. NW, steps away from its current Dupont Circle location. Diners will get their first glance on Aug. 17 and beer lovers can expect 12 draft beers, a cask engine for English-style ales and about 150 different bottles or "as much beer as I can fit," says Birreria beer expert Greg Jasgur.

In August, a new wine bar called Room 11 opens in Columbia Heights and Pizzeria Paradiso expands to a new space that will mimic its popular Birreria Paradiso in Georgetown. Meanwhile, Surfside is finally allowed to serve drinks on its Glover Park rooftop deck.
