US Withdrawal from UNESCO: We Are Still Active in World Heritage Conservation
Despite the formal withdrawal of the United States from UNESCO at the end of 2018, the United States remains a signatory to the World Heritage Convention. This provides us with the basis for continuing constructive involvement in programs activities that will advance preservation of world cultural and natural heritage. US/ICOMOS has been very active in pursuing dimensions of this involvement that provide increasing benefit to communities the world over. We can see this in our leadership in the culture-nature journey and our increasing advocacy for indigenous heritage groups as traditional stewards of natural and cultural resources. In 2019, we will enhance working relationships with ICOMOS national and scientific committees in order to move forward toward the broad goals of the World Heritage Convention and remain an active participant in World Heritage. The role of US/ICOMOS within the US is more important than ever in advocating for the significance of heritage conservation at the national and international levels. We take this mission very seriously and hope that you, our members and followers, will assist in our advocacy and all other efforts.
