Space Race: Launching America's Era of Space Exploration
Sixty years ago #OTD on January 31, 1958, the United States launched its first satellite, Explorer I, into orbit as part of America's contribution to the International Geophysical Year. Besides officially bringing America into the Space Age, Explorer I was equipped with scientific instruments that led to the important discovery of the Van Allen belts. A few months later President Eisenhower authorized the creation of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration. By the end of the next decade, the United States became the first (and so far only) country to land a human on the moon when Neil Armstrong took his "giant leap for mankind" in 1969.
Learn more about Eisenhower's leadership in the wake of the Soviet launch of Sputnik and his role in the creation of NASA for the peaceful exploration of space through the E-Memorial Pivotal Moment, "Space Race: Launching America's Era of Space Exploration" (http://eisenhowermemorial.gov/experience/#/space_race/585) featuring interviews with the late Senator John Glenn and the first female Space Shuttle pilot and commander, Colonel Eileen Collins.
West Point: A Life in Service to His Country
Today we also celebrate the 242nd birthday of Eisenhower's branch of service, the U.S. Army! We thank all those who serve and have served and remember all those who sacrificed their lives throughout our nation's history to preserve our freedoms.
See where Ike's military career began by watching the Pivotal Moment film "West Point: A Life in Service to His Country," featuring an interview with Superintendent of West Point - The U.S. Military Academy, Lt. General Robert L. Caslen. Explore other Pivotal Moment films as well on our website that feature the U.S. Army, particularly the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), such as:

Got #StarWars fever after seeing #RogueOne? In this galaxy not too long ago, #OTD in 1958, President Eisenhower became the first voice to be transmitted across space when a pre-recorded message from him was broadcast from aboard the world's first communications satellite, Project SCORE. His transmitted message was:
"This is the president of the United States speaking. Through the marvels of scientific advance my voice is coming to you from a satellite circling in outer space. My message is a simple one. Through this unique means I convey to you and to all mankind America’s wish for peace on earth and good will toward men everywhere.”

Winning the Presidency: Daring All For Our Country
As the Republican National Convention concludes today, take a look back at conventions past to July 11, 1952, when Eisenhower first secured the Republican nomination for President in Chicago. Eisenhower's first presidential campaign is the subject of the E-Memorial Pivotal Moment film "Winning the Presidency," where you can watch clips of the convention proceedings just as it was in 1952: http://eisenhowermemorial.gov/experience/#/winning_the_presidency
Both conventions that year were the first ones to be nationally televised. After some successful backroom strategy and the decision of the Minnesota delegates to change their votes to fully support him, Eisenhower secured a majority over Ohio Senator Robert Taft moving on to face Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson in the general election. Eisenhower's defeat of Taft signaled a victory for internationalism over the isolationist stances of Taft.
