Throughout the #COVID19 pandemic, rural Oregon required additional support to carry out COVID-19 relief efforts, such as mass testing, vaccination efforts, surge staffing, and patient monitoring. Oregon’s Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) worked with the Oregon Department of Human Services, Oregon Health Authority, and the COVID-19 Response and Recovery Unit to facilitate partnerships with frontier, rural, and urban #EMS assets who provided necessary support across several relief efforts. Both local and state-contracted EMS agencies stepped up, offering support outside of their conventional emergency treatment, triage, and transport roles. This collaborative effort delivered COVID-19 relief across rural Oregon, establishing key response partnerships necessary for support. Responders from the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) continue to deploy to support healthcare professionals, public health partners, and communities. This week, NDMS responders provided surge support at the Yukon-Kusokwim Delta Regional Hospital, which serves 58 rural communities across southwest Alaska. The NDMS team worked with Yukon-Kusokwim Delta Regional Hospital to provide care to both non-COVID and COVID patients and support the hospital’s ongoing COVID-19 testing program.

As COVID-19 cases surged in Los Angeles County in winter 2020, all hospitals in the county were working beyond capacity. These hospitals needed EMS and hospital resources as well as outside support from state and federal partners. With the support of partners across the region and the effective use of Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) cooperative agreement funding, Los Angeles County EMS Agency established a disaster preparedness program and worked with hospitals to strengthen their oxygen delivery capacity.

This allowed the Los Angeles County EMS Agency to stabilize heavily impacted hospitals, enabling them to increase the number of surge beds through space conversion and use of surge tents. Los Angeles County EMS Agency facilitated a regionalized approach toward supporting hospitals on the verge of Crisis Standards of Care implementation and set the precedent for the state in assigning personnel and assisting with fatality management. During this week’s COVID-19 Clinical Rounds, we are addressing a sobering issue that has become all too common: attacks on clinicians during #COVID19 patient diagnosis and care.

Join us for this week’s conversation as we talk about ways that healthcare providers and EMS professionals can diffuse the situation if a patient is becoming violent. This week, we will also talk about how to protect yourself and bystanders if a patient does become violent. https://unm.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0a75704ef6816d86a64d5a1b1&id=4be26838da&e=c05d3d3049

Common disaster-related hazards increase the risk of infection and progression to sepsis, but disasters can make it harder for EMS and healthcare professionals to recognize at risk patients. A new training helps providers spot the signs of sepsis and manage at risk patients in austere environments.

The new “Disaster Medicine: Sepsis” training can equip EMS and healthcare professionals with lifesaving skills they can use during disasters and emergencies to identify, screen, stabilize, and evacuate at risk sepsis patients. The training is free and Healthcare professionals can receive AMA PRA Category 1 Credit or nursing continuing education contact hours for completing the training. https://www.phe.gov/Preparedness/news/Pages/sepsis-training-module.aspx#SolvingSepsisTogether #GetAheadofSepsis

Funding Available! The Pediatric COVID-19 Challenge gives up to three winners an opportunity to split a $200,000 cash prize by leveraging #AI to predict patient outcomes related to a #COVID19 complication that has struck thousands of children.

Although most children with COVID-19 are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms, some children develop a life-threatening reaction to COVID-19 known as MISC-C. We are looking for computational models with data visualizations that can leverage deidentified patient data to better predict pediatric patient outcomes, giving healthcare providers the information they need to make smarter patient care decisions.

As part of this challenge, you must develop, train, execute and then validate computational models to better predict pediatric patients at risk for COVID-19 complications. Challenge participants will use deidentified electronic health record data available through the NCATS’ National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) Data Enclave, a special data repository.

To learn more about this opportunity to make a difference in the fight against COVID-19 and apply, visit https://www.challenge.gov/challenge/pediatric-covid19-data-challenge/

Here, members of the public compete to help the U.S. government solve problems big and small. Browse through challenges and submit your ideas for a chance to win.

A team from the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) made a real difference at a medical facility in Memphis that was overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients. On the third day of their deployment, responders arrived to find a line of 20 ambulances waiting to deliver patients to the emergency department. The hospital had to issue a critical advisory because of the high volume of patients. Just five hours after the NDMS team arrived on the scene, the hospital was open at all levels for patient care.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the NDMS response and how NDMS responders worked with hospital staff at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis to help ensure patients got the care they needed, providers got support at a critical moment, and the hospital could return to providing care for the community it serves. https://www.hhs.gov/blog/2021/10/07/ndms-teams-deploy-to-support-healthcare-facilities-save-lives-in-communities-overwhelmed-by-covid-19.html
