National Medical Disaster Assistance Team assists Upstate in emergency department, reducing wait times

Just 24 hours after responders from the National Disaster Medical System deployed to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, NY, wait times for the emergency department were cut in half. The NDMS Team, which includes physicians, pharmacists, advanced healthcare practitioners, nurses, paramedics, and logistics staff, are providing more than just medical support to decompress the emergency room. They have helped free up staff and space to get people out of waiting rooms and help the hospital receive patient care faster.

NDMS Team Commander Tim Tackett says that he has seen similar situations at hospitals from coast to coast since the start of the #COVID19 pandemic, with many responders deploying and redeploying to help support communities in need. Read the full story to find out how this NDMS team is making a difference:

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV)– Thirty-one fresh faces from all across the country walked into Upstate Medical University Monday ready to serve, and their welcome was more than warm.  “T…

“…as we gather for the holidays, we recognize that this year many more people in our community won’t be seeing the loved ones they lost to the virus. Dozens more will be spending the holidays in a hospital fighting for their lives… Nearly two years into the pandemic, we are caring for a surge of COVID-19 patients that far exceeds the levels we saw last winter.”

In this edition of the ASPR Blog, San Juan Regional Medical Center's Chief Medical Officer Robert Underwood and Medical Director of Emergency Preparedness Brad Underwood share their first-hand experience from their medical center as they battle a sustained surge in #COVID19 cases. Clinicians and staff at San Juan Regional Medical Center are working to save lives, but they need help from the community. Everyone can help by getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, and practicing social distancing. Check out our latest blog post for a behind-the-scenes look at the ongoing response to COVID-19. https://www.phe.gov/ASPRBlog/pages/BlogArticlePage.aspx?PostID=422

This holiday season, responders from the National Disaster Medical System helped make the season a little brighter for a few children in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. During a mission to administer lifesaving #COVID19 vaccines and therapeutics, these responders donated gifts through the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots Program.

The NDMS responders deployed to Saipan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands to support public health and medical professionals as they work to #SaveLives during a surge in COVID-19 cases. NDMS responders are helping prevent the spread of the virus by supporting area COVID-19 vaccination efforts and they are providing monoclonal antibody therapeutics to treat patients who have mild or moderate symptoms. These responders are taking action to help ensure that more people in Saipan have a happy, healthy holiday season.
