We're just hours away from the end of Just 24, and we need your help to reach our goal of $80,000 for legal aid! Your support makes sure we can help people like Ms. K. Will you join us today? https://bit.ly/3sYjw1c

Any of us could face health challenges as we age, but without access to legal services, our families might not have the tools they need to advocate for our care. This was Ms. K's story.

Ms. K's mother is at the early stages of Alzheimer's and on an extremely limited income. There was no way she could have hired an attorney. Because of COVID restrictions, Ms. K couldn't go with her mom to her many medical appointments and ask questions to make sure she got the care she needed.

As an only child, it was already becoming difficult to care for her mom, and Ms. K kept running into barriers. Then she came to CLADC for help. With the legal help to create a Power of Attorney, mother and daughter were able to work together and plan ahead for future challenges. With this Power of Attorney, Ms. K could now accompany her mom to all of her appointments.

Because we had support from people like you, CLADC was able to step in to make sure they had the legal help they needed. Now Ms. K can ensure her mother is receiving the care she needs.

There are so many stories of our clients feeling seen and empowered because an attorney from CLADC was in their corner. When you support CLADC, you make stories like Ms. T's possible.

In another jurisdiction, Ms. T's non-violent criminal record from over a decade ago might have been sealed, but the laws in Virginia (some of the strictest in the country) did not give her that option. Even worse, every time someone searched for her name online, one of the first things they would see was a local news story and picture capturing one of the lowest moments of her life. Somehow all her hard work, her relationships, her story before and after this moment didn't seem to matter. This became the moment potential employers and new acquaintances would use to define her.

When she came to CLADC for help, she didn't know where else to turn, and when her CLADC attorney shared that her record could not be expunged in Virginia, she feared she was out of options. But her CLADC attorney stepped in as a true advocate and spoke up for Ms. T with the newspaper. He convinced the paper to remove the story and Ms. T's picture. When the story was taken down, it changed Ms. T's life. Within a few months she had a job, her confidence was renewed, and she felt like she had a new lease on life.

"Words cannot fully express my profound gratitude for your tireless efforts in advocating for me to have the newspaper take down the article. It has been a source of shame, anxiety and ridicule for me for the past 12 to 13 years and has cost me jobs and my reputation in society. A colossal and heavy weight has been lifted off my shoulders and for that, I am eternally grateful from the bottom of my heart. " -Ms. T, a CLADC Client

Together, we can make a difference for hundreds of our neighbors living in poverty. Will you join us TODAY by making a gift to provide access to justice?https://bit.ly/3sYjw1c

Did you know that in March of this year, 20% of adults in DC were living in households behind on their rent? There’s currently an eviction moratorium in place, keeping families in their homes, but leaders and community members across the city agree that an avalanche of evictions is coming.

Our neighbors, tenants and small landlords, need you to invest in legal aid now so that when this storm comes we're ready to stand with as many people as possible.

The legal help that can prevent crises and disrupt cycles of poverty is out of reach for the people who need it most. We believe everyone deserves access to justice, and you can help us provide it. When you partner with CLADC, you're investing in critical legal services for people who cannot afford to hire an attorney.

CLADC exists to provide access to justice with the love of Christ, but what do we mean by 'access to justice'?

Combating poverty and injustice are complex issues that require robust solutions, but the evidence is clear-access to legal services is a critical component of access to justice. Having an attorney in your corner can prevent a challenge from becoming a crisis and disrupt cycles of injustice.

When you partner with CLADC, you advance access to justice by making sure that people living in poverty have access to the legal services they need.

The evidence also shows that this isn't just good for the people who receive our services, but for everyone. We are all better off when we can all access justice.

Partner with us on May 4th or make an early gift to advance access to justice: https://bit.ly/3sYjw1c

Next week is Just 24, CLADC's 24-hour campaign to raise $80,000 so our neighbors have access to justice.

Last year people like you invested in justice and helped keep CLADC's legal aid clinics running through this difficult year. As a result, we've served hundreds of people through the pandemic--helping them secure safe housing, a fresh start, and peace of mind. People like Ms. H.

In the middle of a global pandemic, Ms. H was on the brink of becoming homeless. A landlord told Ms. H he was processing her housing voucher but then he stopped returning her calls, leaving her without a place to live. Her voucher was expiring and Ms. H was afraid she would lose her access to safe housing.

Ms. H called in to a CLADC legal aid clinic and talked with Anna, a CLADC attorney. “She gave me direction and told me what steps I needed to take,” said Ms. H. “She’s the reason why I stopped crying everyday.”

Our clinics have a waitlist with people who have pressing needs, just like Ms. H. On May 4th, we are asking for your help to raise $80,000 so we can continue to host clinics and meet the legal aid needs for DC residents.

Will you make a donation to make sure people like Ms. H have someone to call? You can give early here or join us on May 4th: https://bit.ly/3sYjw1c
