Mission Statement

Gearin' Up Bicycles' purpose is to create career development opportunities and teach essential workplace skills to teenagers from underserved communities while encouraging cycling as a practical, healthy means of transportation. Gearin’ Up provides access to quality affordable used bicycles for those in need and hosts various community outreach programs throughout the year. What We Do

Gearin’ Up Bicycles, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is a community used bicycle store training and employing young adults from underserved communities in Washington D.C. Gearin’ Up Bicycles will feature a retail space in downtown Washington D.C. There will be a (used) bicycle show room up front and a mechanic shop in the back, and we will sell quality, affordable used bicycles in addition to basic bicycle tools and accessories. Bicycle donations via ongoing in-store donations, bike drives and fundraisers will ensure a constant supply for our mechanic staff to tune-up or rebuild and prepare for sale. Sales representatives and mechanic staff will be teenagers hired from underserved communities. These staff members will gain the skills they need to succeed in their future with Gearin’ Up and beyond while providing the community with quality, affordable used bicycles.

Hey community,

Good news: Your business and support has us 50 customer bike labor intakes deep! We are so thankful that you trust your two-wheeled friends with us in our quest to make bicycling accessible and enjoyable for every single person out there.

Not so good news: We are putting a pause on labor intakes until we can catch up and make more room for bikes in our tiny shop. Stay tuned for an announcement about new intakes.

Love,
your Gearin' Up team

STAFF PROMOTIONS

Your new PROGRAM DIRECTOR
A volunteer with the shop, Keith Jackson began officially working for Gearin' Up in 2019. As Shop Manager, he grew the shop's revenue during the pandemic and led the refurbishment of 400 bicycles this past summer. With 20 years of bicycle industry experience, he has worked to build many shops, including BicycleSpace, HTO, Capital Hill Bikes, Chain Reaction Bicycle, Bikes USA, and Bicycle Exchange. He is the founder of the Anacostia Bicycle Company. In his new role, Keith will further develop Gearin' Up's workforce development programming and strengthen the path into the bicycle industry for our youth mechanics. We are excited to announce his promotion to Program Director for the 2021 season!

Your new SHOP MANAGER
DaiQuan Medley began his Gearin' Up journey in high school when he was looking for an outlet after school. Gearin' Up was (and is) the only youth bicycle mechanic program in the city. DaiQuan quickly became hooked on bicycles, and became a program graduate in 2017. He went on to complete a degree at the Universal Technical Institute in Pennsylvania, and recently was awarded a Professional Bicycle Mechanic Association BIPOC scholarship to attend a United Bicycle Institute class in Oregon. As Senior Mechanic, he was our shop's anchor this past summer during the pandemic. He came in early and stayed late to refurbish the 400 bikes we sold, assisted customers nonstop every day, and completed countless bicycle repairs in 2020, all while being an excellent role model to our youth. We are excited to see DaiQuan take on the Shop Manager role this season!

When you give a kid a bike...

As a nonprofit, we take in-kind bicycle donations year round. This year, we had the opportunity to partner with CentroNía and donate our donated stash of kids bikes to these budding young cyclists. Bicycles bring so much wholesomeness to our communities. They are a wonderful way to get outside, explore DC, and boost one's confidence. Enjoy the ride!

Gearin’ Up Bicycles is a nonprofit bicycle shop in the Eckington neighborhood of Washington, DC, just off the Metropolitan Branch Trail. The mission of Gearin’ Up is to create career development opportunities and teach essential workplace skills to youth from under-served communities, while encouraging cycling as a practical, healthy means of transportation. Gearin’ Up provides access to quality, affordable, used bicycles for those in need and hosts various community outreach programs throughout the year.

Gearin’ Up seeks to hire a Program Coordinator to re-boot its educational and community programming following a year of pandemic restrictions and leadership change. Under the guidance of the Program Director, the Program Coordinator will plan and implement workshops and pop-up clinics to teach bicycle maintenance, repairs and safety. The PC will assist the PD in developing partnerships with high schools, city agencies, libraries, recreation centers and other community groups in underserved areas of the District for purposes of hosting workshops and clinics. The program coordinator will also work to re-initiate on-site programming at the shop, as COVID permits, such as youth “build-your-own-bicycle” trainings, and will work to engage volunteers in all programs. All activities will focus on BIPOC youth communities in Washington, DC.

The Program Coordinator must bring a passion for Gearin’ Up’s mission and for working with youth. Two-three years’ proven bicycle mechanic experience is a must, with comfort working on older as well as new bicycles. Some retail experience and good customer service are desired. Strong ability to work with youth and volunteers is required, including good communication skills and teaching methods. Experience managing a detailed workplan, with multiple programs in play, and ability to generate reports is essential. Experience with Lightspeed is a plus.

Salary range: $37,000-$40,000 with benefits, depending on experience.

Interested applicants should send a resume and cover letter to: [email protected] with the subject line “Program Coordinator position.” We seek to fill this position as soon as possible.
