: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was built without government funds. Jan C. Scruggs started the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund in 1979 with $2,800 of his own money and by 1981 had raised more than $8 million to build the Memorial.

Beginning tonight, the will be illuminated by 488 lamps each night at dusk. Tonight's lighting ceremony honors Campaign for the National Mall Co-Chair David Rubenstein for his $7.5 million donation to fund half the cost of the Monument's repairs.

If you're visiting the National Mall this Fourth of July, make sure to recycle your waste! The Trust, in a partnership with Coca-Cola, the National Park Service, & the National Park Foundation, already recycles nearly 20% of the park's waste each year.
