"We are privileged to have been a part of Iziko's efforts to uncover and conserve the São José shipwreck site through the U.S. Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation over the past four years. The work of Iziko's dedicated scientists, supported by global partnerships like the Smithsonian Institute, has not only brought this important but tragic shared history to life, but has offered critical leadership to a new generation of scientists who can carry on this important work." - U.S. Consulate General Cape Town, Acting Consul General, Will Stevens.

This week we are so proud to come full circle with a project that began in 2016 when Iziko Museums of South Africa received a $500,000 grant through the U.S. Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation to conserve the artefacts recovered from, and protect the site of, the São José slave shipwreck.

The São José was the first shipwreck in the world to have been identified as having sunk while carrying slaves on board.

One of the goals of the grant is to inspire the next generation in the preservation and protection of cultural heritage, and expose all youth to the exciting field of underwater archaeology.

Originally envisioned as a diving course, the pandemic required the Iziko team to shift gears. In partnership with the African Centre for Heritage Activities and Dinaledi Leadership for Education, the Iziko team came up with a unique and pandemic-safe learning lab called “Boat in a Box.”

Ten youth from Langa High School participated in this project. Although they didn’t get to dive, they were exposed to the many aspects of maritime archaeological sciences in a fun and interactive way.

This week we met these inspiring future maritime archaeologists-in-training at a certificate handover and prizegiving ceremony.

The youth enjoyed visiting the Sao Jose exhibition at Iziko's Slave Lodge Museum, gaining hands-on exposure to preservation techniques knowledge at the Iziko Conservation Lab, and finally visiting the shipwreck site.

სიხარულით ვაცხადებთ, რომ ჯვრის მონასტრის პროექტმა გაიმარჯვა ელჩის კულტურული მემკვიდრეობის შენარჩუნების ფონდის კონკურსში! მიმდინარე კვლევით სამუშაოებს, რომელსაც ასევე აშშ-ის მთავრობა აფინანსებს დაემატება შენობის მთლიანი გარე ფასადის საკონსერვაციო სამუშაოები, რაც მოიცავს ოთხივე ფასადს, გუმბათს რვავე მხარეს და კედლის ზედაპირს, დაახლოებით, 1 200 კვადრატული მეტრის ფართობს.

We are happy to announce that the Jvari Monastery project won Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation. The ongoing research works also funded by the U.S. Government will now extend to cover the preservation works for the entire outer sandstone masonry of the building, including all four facades and all eight sides of the drum, about 1200 square meters of wall surface in total.

The preservation works will be conducted by the George Chubinashvili National Research Center for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation.

The 15th-century Gjirokaster Castle is the second largest surviving castle in the Balkans and a popular tourist destination overlooking the town of Gjirokaster, a World Heritage Site. This #AFCP project involved significant work on the walls and floor of the gallery within the castle to reverse water-related damage.
