On #HumanRightsDay2019 we call for the release of all #Tibetan political prisoners & remind the #Chinese government that the selection of #Tibetan #Buddhist leaders, including a future 15th #DalaiLama,is a religious matter that should be decided solely by the Tibetan Buddhist community

On #HumanRightsDay2019 we honor those defending human rights in #China, often at great personal risk. We urge the Chinese govt to guarantee the freedoms enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights & fully protect the human rights that belong to each Chinese citizen.

China claims everyone in Xinjiang camps has 'graduated'

We remain gravely concerned about mass internment, forced labor, & intrusive surveillance experienced by #Uyghurs. After publication of the #XinjiangPapers, any claim that detainees have “graduated” to stable employment must be met with eal skepticism.

The Senate should move quickly to pass legislation (S. 178) that passed overwhelmingly in the House. The U.S. & int’l community must demand greater transparency & hold #Chinese govt officials accountable for gross violations of human rights. https://bit.ly/38gPkWd

Exposed: China’s Operating Manuals for Mass Internment and Arrest by Algorithm - ICIJ

The #ChinaCables reveal for the world to see the brutality of the mass internment camps & high-tech policing system in #Xinjiang. They also expose the scandal of #Chinese diplomats helping to identify for detention #Uyghurs who have lived abroad.

The international community & the UN should demand accountability & an end to likely crimes against humanity. In addition to Politburo member #ChenQuanguo, #Xinjiang’s deputy party secretary #ZhuHailun should be investigated for possible #GlobalMagnitsky sanctions. https://www.icij.org/investigations/china-cables/exposed-chinas-operating-manuals-for-mass-internment-and-arrest-by-algorithm/

A new leak of highly classified Chinese government documents reveals the operations manual for running the mass detention camps in Xinjiang and exposed the mechanics of the region’s system of mass surveillance.

The #XinjiangPapers confirm what was long known, a ruthless campaign carried out by high level officials who should face, at very least, U.S. & int’l sanctions, including #Politburo member #ChenQuanguo. Congress should pass legislation to address what are truly egregious abuses.https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1195728248040087552

“China has detained up to a million Muslims, a campaign it calls a benevolent and routine effort against the pull of extremism. But 403 pages of Communist Party documents we obtained reveal how officials plotted to carry out a ruthless, coercive clampdown. https://t.co/s6Sa2GenA3”

Chairs are disappointed the World Bank will continue to fund a ‘vocational training’ project in #Xinjiang. Ending support for partner schools is a half-measure when #China uses ‘vocational training’ to mask mass internment, forced labor & other human rights abuses.

Pervasive repression and the expansion of mass internment camps makes due diligence impossible in #Xinjiang. World Bank and all entities/companies operating there should assess whether their presence contributes to gross violations of human rights.

See letter by Chairs to World Bank President David Malpass.

CECC Chairs on Rising Violence in Hong Kong (from Twitter today

"The escalating violence in Hong Kong is extremely concerning and the premeditated attack on university campuses, where over one thousand rounds of teargas were used, raises disturbing questions as to whether the Chinese government’s strategy is to create more chaos & new protests"

"Equally concerning is Beijing’s announced plans to exercise more control over Hong Kong politics, judiciary, and educational system and to accelerate efforts to pass national security legislation that would further curtail free speech and civil liberties."

"We condemn authorities’ use of excessive force and support demands for accountability, political dialogue, and the protection of democratic freedoms promised by Beijing in the Sino-British Declaration, an international treaty."

"Attacks on candidates for district council elections and threats to cancel the November 24, 2019 district council elections will only enhance the Hong Kong people’s grievances and further signal Beijing’s full control over the Hong Kong government."

"We also urge the Chinese government to consider the likely costs of any additional measures to undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy, including more political disruption, curtailed access to the international financial system, and new sanctions by the U.S. and the international community."
